Hornady case prep center vs RCBS

IIRC the Hornady includes trimming facilities and the RCBS does not. And the Hornady is about 2x the cost of the RCBS. I've used the latter for several years and have no issues with it. I handle trimming with several other means depending on caliber.

I think the Hornady is more heavy duty, but it's not really an apples/apples comparison due to the features.

I use the Trim Mate and a motorized Forster Trimmer, so I'm really not in the market for one with a built-in trimmer. But if I was starting out today with a brand new progressive and wanted to eliminate the trimming bottleneck. I'd choose the new RCBS Universal. Here's why, and its partly due to my existing experience with the Trim Mate.

I've never been enamored by Hornady's choice to mount the case prep cutters horizontal. I like having gravity help me. That might have something to do with my 65 year-old used hands and wrists I suppose, but the point is to make case prep easier, right? I don't want to have to push or hold on tight to anything more than I have to.

The trimmer part on the Hornady is mounted vertically, however you need a separate collet for every case. I really like the idea of a hands free spring fed trimmer as on the RCBS and its universal case holder. Watch the RCBS YouTube video. The RCBS unit also has optional 3-way cutters for the trimmer that chamfers and deburrs while it trims.

That leaves the case prep side for uniforming and/or reaming military pockets and deburring primer flash holes. Much faster too when you can hands free trim one case and take care of the pockets on the one you just trimmed ... at the same time. I also like the variable speed tool mounts.
