Hornady LNL Case Feeder

This is a great thread one I think Hornady can learn from. I loved my hornady LNL past tense, I made one tweak to it for the primer dimple in where I drilled and tapped it and threaded a steel screw under the primer punch even though hornady says it is not needed and self limiting. http://www.dayattherange.com/?p=3884

I believe this customization gives me a much better feel on the seating of a primer. Now to the past tense comment, I loved it until I added the case feeder. It adds to much to go from one caliber to another for my liking. Out of frustration I have not used my press after loading 3K rounds of 45acp and 1k rounds of 44 magnum because I hate switching it over. Also where the black punch actuates the swipe the black rubber piece which guides the punch has come totally out and I believe that is due to the twisting that most are talking about in this thread. I believe my case feeder will be coming off this weekend. Having it all sitting there just to look at and upset that I spent the money is not doing any good :)

Apologies for the rant so early in the morning.

Nope I get it. It takes alot of tuning to get that stupid thing working. Ive wanted to smash mine multiple times in the past. I do run mine feeding cases by hand from time to time. I just take off the pusher foot so I can slip in the case. Then I can leave my case feeder setup for high production runs.

Excellent point on the primer punch as well. I used a small piece of steel strapping under my primer punch, with a drop of superglue on the back side.

Great website BTW. Keep the content coming.

I put a feeler gauge under mine as soon as I got it because of all the talk of problems. I have a slight dimple as the feeler gauge I was using was a .002 then I used a .006" Mine has seated primers .0035" since day one.

I also shimmed the drive hub but either Hornady changed the hub/plate clearance or I got lucky as I only needed a .003" shim in it compared to the .009 to .015 ones that others had to do. I took it out as some of the shell plates would rub on subplate. By putting the shim in the primers seated almost .006" into the case.

It irrated me a little as I could have bought another LNL for less than what the case feeder cost and got 400 more bullets. But it is what it is now so I'm going to make it work and make it easier to change calibers

My LNL works like a champ. Haven't tried the .223 case thing but everything else is.
What may be overlooked is the need to buy the feeder plates separately. I waited long enough after buying my case feeder and using it on hand gun ammo to overlook that when starting to load 223 I had to buy a rifle plate. The plates are a significant expense to factor in.

I had a sheet of 1/8" peel 'n stick, black Sorbathane padding, so I used it on the outside for my idea of quieting the hopper noise. Seemed to help a lot, but basically I let it fill and then turn it off. I am not in a rush and value coming up for air, so to speak, after a tube full of cases.

I would think something like this would work well on the bullet feeder as well which I find much louder than the case feeder. I thought about the sound deadening panels for automotive use on the. They are black and most are 1/8 thick. They are primarily used in doors and floorboards. Automated reloading is not a quiet business:D. I've never been in a quiet ammo plant:rofl:

What that is in reference to is Drainsmith talking about putting a empty 223 case on top of the LNL when reloading. If it stands upright then timing is good.

Another fix for the Hornady Case Feeder. My push rod guide keeps coming out and I have had other reports stating the same thing. Part #27. I called Hornady they offered to send me another top notch service nice people but I asked had there been and update and I was told no. So with about 30K rounds on this press I knew it was only going to come out again. I have tried super glue and gorilla glue and neither held for more than 1K rounds of reloading. A friend of mine told me about quicksilver which I must say I am embarrassed to say I did not know about. So I went about cleaning everything with mineral spirits, alcohol, and gun degreaser. Well I have put 1500k rounds of 38 special through this setup and it is holding nicely.

Not speaking to your specific situation but Hornady told me it was part of the design for it to pop out in the event adjustment was off or something else caused a bind for whatever reason. Mine popped loose for that very reason, he advised to re-install the bushing with super glue. FWIW.

I used super glue on mine too, but they actually suggested clear nail polish.

Im working on a modified stock pivot block too right now. Try to make it so people dont have to buy more than a couple bucks worth of hardware, and they can get the slop out of the pivot and have it run smoothly forever.

And stupid Photobucket, messing with all my pics... argh

Used superglue as well. Was a little bummed that it came out but so far so good.

My push rod was definitely not adjusted wrong I had it adjusted at one point where it would not swipe all the way over to drop a cartridge down yet it would tilt. I actually felt like something was out of alignment but my untrained eye could not spot it and sending pictures to Hornady did not get it resolved. One thing is for sure this is the smoothest my press has ever run with the case feeder.

I ran without the case feeder for almost 6 months due to my lack of patience and frustration and without it the press is butter smooth, I did not have all the priming issues others report etc. Though when I put mine together I did polish everything like the feed ramp etc. Now everything is butter smooth
