So I was sizing/de-priming some .45 ACP and trying to adjust my case feeder. That's another issue that just popped up today. Anyway, all of a sudden I feel some resistance on the up stroke. A little unusual put very minor resistance. Next thing I know, the protrusion on my drive hub had sheered off :what:

At first, I didn't even realize it. I was just wondering why the shell plate wasn't indexing. Then I noticed it. What really surprised me is how little of resistance it took to break. I've loaded just over 10K rounds (or so) on this press.

I called Hornady and got a hold of sales. She was ready to send out the part but I told her I was unsure of how to install it. So then she "connected" me to technical. I've been on hold for about 50 minutes. I'm in spot 2 though.

I have no doubt that they'll fix it. I just hope I don't have to send the whole thing in.

Update

Hornday is sending me a new drive hub. The problem now is getting to old one off. He told me to just wiggle to old one off. I tried for a few minutes with him on the phone and no dice. Told him I would call back if I couldn't get it off.

Any suggestions? He said it just sits on a pin. Maybe use a washer and something for leverage?

Something is wrong... I ended up breaking the indexing gear tring to get the hub out. I'm cutting my losses and mailing to Hornady. Doug (the Hornady Rep) just chuckled at me and said he'd fix it up if I sent it in. Please don't call me a press abuser :uhoh: Next thing you know, I'll have to go to meetings with Walkalong. :D

That's Tuesday nights at 8:00PM. I'll see you there. :D

The hub on mine just pops right of. Something else must be damaged.

I have found that since the hub drops down when changing plates that things can get in a bind if you just screw the cap screw in tight drawing the hub up. I always start the cap screw, then pull up on the cap screw to get the hub up all the way in the plate, then tighten it down.

Ditto that. When I updated mine to the ez-ject style the hub on mine just lifted right off, not even a little stiff. I just greased it up a little put it back and installed the new subplate. My "guess" is that you have rust, powder, or some other crud stuck in there that is causing it to bind up on you.

Probally so. I just droped it off at UPS. $60 to pack n' ship  Oh well, It's worth it. How else am I going to feed my addiction.

Oh and one of the Hornady Tech's said the main problem with hubs braking is if the shell plate gets a little loose, then it can create extra stress and shear easier. Not sure if that was my problem, but just FYI to look out for.

The first thing that I notice when my shellplate gets loose it that the cases won't line up with the dies. They start tipping. When I up graded my press, the hub just lifted off very easy. You got more problems than you realize. Hornady will fix you up tho.

Update!

Received it from Hornady a couple days ago. Haven't had a chance to load any on it yet but they replaced all the damage I did. They even replaced some of my priming parts such as the primer slide that was a bit dinged up.

+1 For there customer service. I only wish they sent a letter so I knew what the problem was. I may call just b/c I'm curious.

Doug and Hornady service are first rate. Remember to grease the zerks every 2K or 3K miles.
