Just picked up a new one. I think the subplate might need adjustment because when the shellplate's ball detents are in the subplate pockets the cases don't align with the dies. It's like the subplate needs to rotated CCW (looking from the top) maybe 1/16" or so. It seems like the cam feed primer rod doesn't line up well with the primer slide assembly roller either which also seems to indicate the subplate might be off.

Is this something that can be adjusted without sending it back? Figures I just started this on a Friday and they aren't open till Monday! :banghead:

Everythings else seems like it's intact. Maybe something got bounced around during shipping but nothing looks bad.

Thanks!

No idea huh? I've tried to figure this out but I'm stumped. I can't figure out how to adjust the subplate- which is defintely not right. Sucks.. I wanted to get this up and running tomorrow...

Sorry Luggernut,
Haven't run into that problem with any of my three Hornady progressive presses. Do you have an extra shell plate to test with your press? Just thinking that the problem could be in either the shell plate or the sub plate adjustment. Am sure that Doug Derner (X206) at Hornady (800-338-3220) can put you on the right track Monday when they open. Good luck.

Good shooting and be safe.

LHB1- yes I'm sure it's not the shellplate- I think the subplate is definitely in need of adjsutment- I'm not sure how to adjust this thought. Thanks anyway.

Read your instruction manual or download it from Hornady. There are directions on how to adjust the timing of the press if it isn't lining up like it should.

Thanks Steve. I've read the manual. It's the subplate not the shellplate timing.

Luggernut, can you take a picture of the subplate? If I see it, I can tell you if it differs from mine. My guess is that you have to adjust that pawl thingy because the timing is off. Everything seemed to line up fine with mine.

I don't have a picture. But I really don't think it's timing. When the "timing" is right the detent balls on the shellplate sit it in the detents on the subplate right? Well when the shellpate detent balls sit perfectly in the subplate nothing line up at all... the cases are about 1/8" off center of the dies (ram up and down)!

The best thing is to call Hornady on their support line. They're very helpfull and responsive.

The pawl adjustment determines how far the shells rotate, one pawl adjusts the rotation on the travel up and the other on the travel down. If the case isn't hitting the dies or the primer station properly these are what you need to adjust if all other trouble shooting in the manual doesn't work. The adjustments are very fine so do only small increments at a time and then try.

I don't think the subplate is made to be adjustable. I have removed mine before. On the ram just under the subplate, there are 2 allen head screws (one on each side) that hold the subplate in place. You could check if those are loose; should be tight. Does the subplate move/rotate at all?

Ahhh, 1911- I did check those screws that hold the subplate together. They are tight. I though I could make an adjustment there however the ram is countersunk so that there is zero adjustment on the ram/subplate there. I have no idea how the ram is center/secured on the yoke and it doesn't appear lose at all.... the only thing I can think of is that maybe in transit that the subplate got hit hard and the that forced the ram to rotate slightly on the yoke. It doesn't seem to budge now.

This weekend has been frustrating not being able to get it to work. The qualitity of everything seems so good I can't imagine how this happened. I'll post what Hornady says tomorrow.

Luggernut I think your right, it not a timing issue of you can move the plate into the detentes when the pawls aren't engaged and it is 1/8" off. I have takes a couple pictures of my lower shell plate and the detentes should line up with the die openings, if yours, look the same then look at the shell plate and see if compares to the picture of mine.

Idano, mine doesn't look like yours. The shellplates (have both #1 and #8) are good because the the case is centered onto of the deprimer hole of the subplate, etc.

Luggernut what exactly doesn't look like mine, the sub plate with the dimples or the shell plate with the to spring loaded bearings? Does the dimple in your sub plate align up with the holes at the top of the press for the dies like mine do in the pictures I posted?

Thanks for the help guys- I'm shipping it back to Hornady for repair. Talked with Bob this morning.

Well I just got it back and everything seems to be exactly the way it should be! Somehow the ram got shifted on the yoke. The ram is locked in at the factory and isn't adjustable without going back for repair. Now I just need to set up the dies and load away.

I also picked up some of the newer Hornady die sets- I really like the sleeve that the seater die has- it helps stabilize/align the bullet before seating.. nice idea IMO.

I'll report once I get cranking on this baby.
