Can the Hornady LNL powder measure, with the case activated powder drop, be used on the Lee Classic Cast Turret press? I'm starting to think that I'd like more powder weight flexibility than the Lee disks allow...

You comments, as always, are greatly appreciated.

Is this for handgun or rifle?

If the primary use is for handgun cartridges, then--depending on which Lee Powder measure you have, I would start with

1) an Upgrade to the Pro Auto Disk version. I think the upgrade kit includes the adjustable charge bar--

or,

2) buy and try a Lee adjustable charge bar. People do report mixed results with its accuracy, but I find that it works well (+- one tenth--e.g., two-tenths variance) with the powders I use (ball, flattened ball, etc--not flake) in a range from about 3.2 grains on up.

If it's for rifle cartridges, then you (and I) await someone's experience with the Hornady--

It'll work fine. Problem is that with the measure, case activated powder drop and powder thru expander you wind up with a powder measure that cost more than the press. I thought about it when I was loading on the Lee Turret. After working out the numbers I sold the turret, bought a LnL AP, and couldn't be happier.

DaveinFloweryBranchGA to the rescue

The first problem is the AutoDisk is too small to drop 50 grains of extruded powder like 4895. Therefore, you can't load big cartridges like 30-06 on the Lee Classic Turret. But the Lee is just so handy for a moderate run of 50-200 rounds of 30-06 that people have looked for a way around the limitations of the AutoDisk.

The second problem is the Hornady powder measure is too big and heavy for the Lee turret to control.

Fortunately the ever inventive and resourceful DaveinFloweryBranchGA has already confronted these problems and successfully adapted a RCBS Uniflow to the Lee turret. He has writen about it here: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=342212

There are even pictures of the setup. Thank you Dave :):):)

I use the Hornady measure with the powder drop for medium to large rifle but it seems too heavy for the turret indexing mechanism. So I pull the indexing rod and index by hand. I use the double disk for .223 and .30-30 with the indexing rod. - Phil
