Hornady Primer Seater Plug

I don't know how new 'new' is, my press came with that about 7 years ago.

To improve it, they need to get rid of that sharp point, and make a hard steel, adjustable insert for the press body where the primer seater impacts.

If I recall the latest design change was to the shelf. The original design has a square edge and powder residue would build up keeping the pin from retracting. The was why you had to take them apart every so often and clean them. The newer design is suppose to be on a taper so the residue does not stick to the shelf. Mine are the old design and work just fine. Like with any of the progressive you must keep the primer sled areas clean of residue or expect trouble. I would not bother in ordering one. Hornady will send you a free one if they determine you have a problem that requires the newer design. What needs to happen is the pointed base need to be gone and/or a steel plug needs to be installed in the casting for it to contact to eliminate he dimple.

Save your money for something more useful like reloading supplies.

I just called Hornady Tech Support. They said they redesigned the seater plug about a 1 1/2 years ago. The new design is supposed to keep trash out of the stem, preventing it from jamming like mine did Tuesday evening. I'm going to order one. I'll try to take some pictures of both versions, after it comes in.
