With my Hornady Single State, loading .45 ACP Hornady 200gr HAP using the flat seater into cases all sized, expanded, and trimmed to .892. Height of die set to raised case. Crimp seater lowered to .472. Die has been cleaned. Finished round should measure 1.238. Does vary a little bit.

Why does the ram handle seem to bind sometimes when lowering the completed shell -- that is, doing the crimp? It does not do it on all rounds.

Is there a possibility that instead of using the hand case finishing tool after trimming that I should invest in a motor-driven device to be sure all are beveled? I don’t see any obvious bits of brass hanging on.

Thanks/sbw

What dies are you using? Don't really know what you mean by "binding"...

I believe most die operations are done on the upstroke (neck expanding on bottleneck cases being an exception), and the crimp is done as the cartridge is moving into the die...

Another thought; you may be over crimping and bulging the case and the larger diameter "bulge" is hanging up in the die. WAG!

It's more than likely a different in wall thickness of the brass. TC are sensitive to the over all diameter. A larger diameter will give more crimp and more squeeze in the taper. A fix is to apply some imperial case lube wax to the die, or on the outside of a few rounds to lube it.

The crimp has been completed when the round is being lowered from the die. Could simply be you are feeling the brass pull away from the crimp portion of the die. If that is all it is, a tiny bit of lube, as suggested, should alleviate it. Make sure you are not over crimping.
