ok,so instead of going with the berry hp's i went with 115 grain hornady xtp in 9mm.and just my luck, now i cant find load data using the win 231 with them:cuss:.i just recently started loading and the 231 is all i have.
i know i just went through this with the berry hp's,but does anyone have load data for the 115 grain hornady xtp's in 9mm luger useing win.231?

Hornady 8th Edition lists a starting load of 4.1GR at 1000fps and a max load of 4.7gr at 1100fps with a COL of 1.075" for the 115gr Hornady XTP #35540 with Winchester 231

On the above link to Hodgdon's load data site the charge weight is a little more than listed in the Hornady manual. They also use a longer OAL which will account for the additional powder charge weight. I would go with the Hornady data because it's specifically for the XTP bullet instead of the Speer GD bullet on the Hodgdon site.

Agree on going with the Hornady data and their stated COL (I use 1.08"), and I find it strange that they don't list a load with W231 using their 124gr XTP that I have. I'm backing off the 115 data by 0.1 gr and not exceeding the published load at 115gr @ 1050 fps. That should keep me in safe territory.

ok.i started out at 4.1 gr ,which is the starting load, and worked my way up.i found that my firestar cycled better at 4.3gr with col of 1.075.
thanks for all the help:D.

If your going to work out side Hornady data start at a reduced charge and work up slowly in .1 increments, 231 only has a .5 gr. load range. Personally, I like to use powders that have broader load range, or slower burn rate as it were. Power Pistol which I haven used yet, has a load range of 1.7 grains and can be loaded down as far as 231, but also 100 fps higher velcoity that with 231, if desired. My personal choices are HS6 or Longshot, though there are slower burning powder's than those two for 9mm.
For Longshot data go to Hogdon's reloading pages.

In such a small case as in the 9mm charge weights are also usually small. When you reduce the charge by the normal 10% of course the charge range will be small because the initial charge weight is small.

The data on the Alliant load data site recommends a Max charge of 6.7gr Power Pistol with a 115gr Speer GD bullet. Is there really a 1.7gr spread between the min and max? I find that hard to believe the min charge is 5.0gr considering that would be a 25% reduction of the Max charge weight.

My Lyman 49th Edition lists a charge weight range of 5.9gr to 6.5gr Power Pistol with a 115gr bullet. That's only a .6gr charge range which is only .1gr more than with W231. That's right at 10% a far cry from a 1.7gr spread. Where did you get that data?

Don't get me wrong, I see no reason no to use Power Pistol if you like the results. I use W231 for practice ammo and Longshot for more serious work...
