Hornady's Sub-X 190 gr. Bullet

Ive done some looking into these as Ive wanted a bullet that will open subsonic that wasnt crazy expensive. If I could find some to reload, I would try them!

This is about the best info Ive seen on gel performance. Its not perfect by any means, but they do work.

I think I am going to try Reloader 7 for the SUB-X and Nosler 190 C.C.s. Much cleaner powder than 1680. A loader I kinda trust on another forum gets bolt lock-back and 1000 fps @ 11.5g. So where should I start? 11.8? What increments down to say 11.3? 1000-1050 seems like a good target. I don’t have a chrono yet, but can tweak when I do get one. I don’t understand why the bullet companies don’t list subsonic loads for the 9” bbl AAC designed the round for. Liability reasons I imagine.

My hope is to find a load for the two projectiles that will be acceptable in both my 8.3” SS 1:8 twist and original AAC 9” 1:7 upper. Or at least a load for each gun that is accurate with both projectiles.

i have about the same amount (8 lbs.) of CFEBLK, but may dedicate that to 6.8SPC and premium AK47 ammo if the 7 works out.

Here are the two hungry critters. One has a pistol lower now and a shorty can.

Not sure about RL 7 but I stopped at 11.5gr of 1680 out of my 10" barreled blackout with an AAC Cyclone suppressor. They are still subsonic and shoot like a champ. I may push it up a little when the weather warms and see how high I go before I hit supersonic.

Would be nice if the sub-x opened up a little more in the chopping block video. But all in all if Hornady can keep the projectile cost down it'll be a good quiet ranch pest eradication option.

I don't know if this will be of any help. I use R-7 with Missouri Bullet's 245 gr. @ 2.100" COL. When I was working up a load, 11.0 gr. was the 1st weight that reliably locked the bolt back. 12.0 gr. gave me an average 1,067 fps. 8.5" barrel with KAK Shockwave pistol stock and their tube, spring, and buffer.

The Hodgdon subsonic load data list IMR4198 at 11.4C gr. So taking in consideration that that was for a 16", I did one load at 11.7 gr. and one load at 11.9 gr. 2.050" COL. I'm hoping the weather breaks soon to test them out.

Edit: I misquoted by .1gr.

Good info kco.Thanks. If I understand the physics correctly my lighter bullet should lock back with heavier than 11.0 and achieve your fps with lighter than 12.0

I would think that as you posted earlier, that 11.5 gr. would lock back the bolt reliably, providing that buffer and spring is at or near the same.
You may end up going over 12.0 gr. to get to 1050 fps, if that's what your goal is.
There isn't much data for R-7 in 300 Blk out there, especially in the 190-200 gr. zone. Last year, late spring or early summer, when I wrote Hornady, a rep said they were working on the data for three 190 gr. No new posting on their site updates yet. Darn coronavirus.

I agree. I can get 100 Sub-X's for what I'd pay for 50 Maker bullets.

It's hard paying Maker Rex prices, I'd do it for subsonic game hunting for food, but for pest eradication my pocketbook might not let my trigger finger move.

The Sub-X's will be a very nice option at a lower cost.

Given the performance I don't mind the cost of Maker Rex. They are really good. I shoot Berry Plated for cheap subsonic plinking but for killing things they get the Maker REX. I was not terribly impressed with the Sub-X terminal performance when I shot them into water jugs. The factory ammo was also not always subsonic in either my 9 or 16 inch gun, especially the 16 inch gun.

220 gr Maker REX dug this one out of the chert behind the last armadillo I killed with my 300 BO.

MCB, I knew you had good success and nice things to say about Makers and have plans on giving them a go. What's your rifle set up and load recipe that works for you?

My AR pistol gets all the work lately the poor carbine is riding the bench since I got the 9-inch pistol put together.

I tried a few different things with Maker when I bought the first batch. I really wanted IMR 4227 to work as it was very quiet under the Barry's but could not get reliable cycling with the Maker REX. After trying a few other things, I ended up pretty much right on what they publish on their website for the 220gr REX. 10.4 gr Accurate 1680, 2.150 OAL. I get 1060fps in the carbine and 975 fps in the pistol.

Those Maker Rex petals are impressive. The SUB-X expand more like 9mm Hydra-Shok. For hunting I’d definitely go with the Rex. Better for defense too.

I’ll get a couple hundred Maker’s after I have a large stash of the Hornady. Quantity and quality always a trade off unless you have the big bucks.

I’ve been looking for 190 sub-x but there are none to be found. I do have 500 Barry’s 220 Fmj for subsonic range practice.
