What are your thoughts on a .257 round nose 117 Gr bullet in 25.06?

I am preparing to reload for a new 25.06 weatherby vanguard 2 and .257 hunting bullets are hard to find. Nosler partitons are out of stock everywhere. I have some 117g Hornady interlocks.

What say you on these subject bullets at shots under 150yd on deer?

Bull

We use them in a 257 Weatherby Magnum. Muzzle velocity is about 3250 with that gun. 25-06 with the right powder should be able to hit 3000 at the muzzle which is still plenty. Max range is 200ish though because they have the BC of a brick and after than they drop like a stone. However, they hit like a Mack truck, as in DRT, and fall over.

Just be sure you have a fast enough twist to run em and youll be good to go. We couldnt get 120 Partitions to stabilize in my buddys gun because its an old school fast twist gun, however these are incredibly stable and forgiving. We ended up with 2 shots on top of each other, then the third about an inch high as the gun heats up.

To Bull, I like the picture-man, retriever, birds on the ground. Only thing I don't see to complete the picture is your shotgun.

Many of the older calibers like .30-30, .35 Remington and a few others are factory loaded with round nose bullets for deer up to 150 yards or so. However, the bullets they use are considerably heavier than the bullets you are proposing to use. If you were shooting ground hogs or gophers to 300 yards or more then I would use spitzers. I am not familiar with Hornady interlocks as my reloading bullets are 90% Sierra's. As some others have suggested it may take some trial and error to find what load shoots best in your rifle. Enjoy your new rifle and its versatility on game animals and varmints.

It’s a marvelous bullet!
Tougher than most sources relate.
I’ve got a bunch, and have used them in .257Roberts and ancient Marlin .25-36.

Out to 300yds, they shoot pretty flat due to high velocities. Hold together at high impact velocities. Weatherby has been loading them fo 60+ yrs for some reason!

For ages Remington loaded the 117 RN Core-Lokt as a standard catalog item for the .257 Roberts. I still have a few left over that I bought a long while back.

That Remington bullet killed truckloads of deer all over Texas, I bet that the Hornady 117 RN will work just as well for you in your .25/06 and .257 Weatherby.

Stay safe.

I've used them in my standard 25-06 for deer and feral hogs. They were usually loaded to around 2850fps give or take. I found they shot very well from my 1-10 twist.

As a side to them, I tried the 150gr version in our 270 and over 50gr of IMR-4350 and they rocked as well. Mild recoil and one shot performance on an abundance of hogs up into the 350# range.

Give them a go.

Round nose bullets aren’t fashionable anymore in the higher velocity rifle cartridges but they work extremely well inside the ranges that are designed for.

I used to use a 170 gr RN Core Lokt in 280 Rem that never failed to pass through, left great blood trails, and stopped deer fast.
