Am wanting to start casting and It looks like my Hornet is the odd man out.
Reading many threads in the reloading threads and going to the castboolits site, I've noticed a lot of talk about shooting small pistol primers in the Hornet, and how accuracy is enhanced .

How many here have gone to the small pistol primers and what kind of results are you getting with them?

I kind of get the drift as being ,that the case capacity is so small, the rifle primers cause the bullet to start moving before the powder charge is fully ignited, causing wide swings in velocities and standard deviation.

How about some favorite loads with the small pistol primers? Is any one using cast bullets and which design?

Thanks in advance.

I don't use cast bullets in the Hornet, but if you want to experiment with them, please report back here.

Small pistol primers in the Hornet are an iffy thing. Sometimes they give better accuracy, sometimes not. For the ideal Hornet powder, Hodgdon's Li'l Gun, they seem detremental.

I recommend using the Lee Collet Die with the Hornet and putting washers on the shell holder, causing the Collet to activate early and size only the last 0.20" or so of the neck, using the unsized portion as a "pilot" to center the bullet in the throat. If you are going to use cast bullets, you might experiment with no sizing at all -- shoot the cases "as fired."

IF you are going to cast, size & lube .22 Hornet bullets, I feel for ya!

But I can't quite reach ya!

I use CCI BR-4 Small Rifle bench rest primers with my T/C Contender 10" barrel pistol and BRNO 110 rifle. My bullets are Sako S-103 50gr RN-FMJ and S-105 55gr FMJ. S&B 50gr bullets are pure ****.
