I have a Mosin 91/30 with a case that won't come out. I feel like an idiot, everything I have done has gone from bad to worse at an ever increasing rate.

I tried to get it out using a wooden dowel as an extension for a cleaning rod. The dowel shattered, splintered and is stuck. I tried to get the wooden dowel out with a screwdriver to either break it up or maybe put enough pressure that the case will come out. Nope. It's stuck too.

Is there a way of getting the cartridge out of the chamber by going through the receiver, or should I go to my gunsmith with my head hung in shame and my wallet wide, wide open, or (what I'm leaning to) count this as a total loss.

I'd at least like the screwdriver back.

well if the case head is intact, you could drill and tap the pirmer hole, then with a bolt and an assorment of washers pull the case out through the receiver...

if you've ripped the case head off, you could try using a bolt, or tap to cut threads into the case walls, and use that and some washers to pull it out...

how'd you get a screwdriver stuck in a dowel where you couldn't pull it out???

seeing as how this is a 60 dollar gun i wouldn't bother taking it to a smith...

Is the case in the chamber a live round or an just a case? If just a case I would probably try to pry it free . If all else fails spray some ballistol down the barrel, and set it where the sunlight will heat it up some. Sounds like the chamber of the rifle may have an issue.HTH

The case is spent and it is intact. The screwdriver was my brilliant attempt at trying to put pressure on the dowel, I figured that if I could keept it up I would be able to knock the case out, but it's obvious how well it worked out.

Don't know why I am double-posting,sorry 'bout that. If you can pull the bolt free from the receiver, can you see the cartridge head? I believe that's a rimmed cartridge, can you get a flat tip screwdriver under the rim and pry?

not on a mosin....

drill and tap the primer hole, pull it out with a 8" section of threaded rod and some washers... if it works on a die, then you shouldn't have any problem with a gun..

Throw away the screwdriver!! First pour a little penetrant like WD-40 into the barrel and let it sit over night . Hopefully the penetrant will go down around the case. Then fill the barrel almost full with oil and , insert a tight fitting dowel and strike the dowel with a mallet. This creates a hydraulic effect which hopefully removes the case. If that doesn't work, get a tap and threaded die as mentioned above.

Stuck!

Good advice from mete. You can get uber-long drill bits if needed.
You might try using a drift and tap on the back of the case a time or two, and try knocking it out from the muzzle end again. If there's a rough spot in the chamber that has it locked in, tapping it forward may break it loose a little. Seen that work once or twice.

Also, if you can get a long, thin punch to the rim, try to get it to rotate by tapping at an angle...That might work too.

Just curious...What brand ammo was it?

It wasn't commercial. It was czech silver tip. Apparently since the cases are lacquered there are issues with stickiness in rough or undercleaned chambers. I had 0 issues with the copper-washed steel Russian ammo I had so I think it's just that I didn't get all the cosmoline/storage goop out of the chamber when I cleaned it out.

The screwdriver is in there really good. If the rod/dowel comes out, so will it. I'm just about 99% sure that the rifling is a total loss.

I don't really have the tools or knowledge to do any of the drilling or tapping that's been suggested. I figure that if the case comes out, then so will everything else. Is there a broken shell extractor made for the 91/30. I'm taking it to the gunsmith tomorrow to see if he can get an estimate. Hopefully he'll have the decency to wait until I'm gone to make fun of me. The rifle has it's handguard taken off and is in a case in the trunk of my car where I can't see or think about it until I walk in tomorrow morning.

It's sitting in my gunsmith's "to do" pile sans handguard, bolt and screwdriver. It'll be a couple of weeks before I hear anything more. I'll just have to do my best to forget about the thing till I go pick it up.

I know this is a bit late, but just for any other folks who are tuned in:

GAWDAMMIT, DON'T USE A WOOD DOWEL AS A CLEANING ROD OR CLEARING ROD!!!! THEY ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS BREAK OFF IN THE BARREL!!!!!!

Now that I have that off my chest, I think what I would do is remove the barrel so I could get at the case, then either pry or use the drill-and-tap method. That receiver ring is so deep that trying to get at the case otherwise is not on.

With a bit of luck the rifling is not completely ruined.

I don't think the barrel comes off on a mosin, I don't see any joints anywhere, near as I can tell it's completely continuous with the receiver.
