Evidently Houston (gasp - what a shock :scrutiny:) is #2 in homicides in the US

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4861918.html

At my trip to the range last Sunday, my CHL instructor was running through a Texas CCW class of TWENTY-FOUR that day! FOURTEEN the day before. He says demand for Texas CHL's has gone through the roof. So much so, that he's thnking of adding a class on Fridays, or some other day in the week to keep up with demand.

Thanks New Orleans!

Yeah, my brother just sent his paperwork in. Not sure about the rest of the family. I didn't realize things were getting that bad.

It is obvious why....

alot those folks that moved there frim New Orleans a couple years ago were not your usual law abiding citizens......alot those so called undocumentated workers that came up from down south were not your usual poor folks looking to better their life.........The homeboys don't like all this intrusion on their turf so they are fighting back......chris3

Texas DPS must be stepping up to the plate in getting all those CHL applications through to handle the surge. It took about 33 days from the time they received my application to the time I was holding the license in my hand. Of course, for $140 they better be on the ball.

I’d like to thank everyone for the hard work they have put into making this possible. We’ve elected a string of do nothing Mayors. We’ve repeatedly elected a DA more concerned with keeping guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens than criminals. We’ve unofficially officially declared ourselves a sanctuary city. We’ve tied the hands of our understaffed and overworked Police force.

But now is not the time to be complacent. With a bit more hard work, WE CAN BE NUMBER 1. Rest assured good citizens that your elected leaders are working feverishly to make #1 a reality.

However, do pause for a moment and take a deep breath. Smell the sweet smell of what we’ve accomplished. We are standing square in the midst of #2. Enjoy it. You voted for it.

#2??

Wow, I didn't know it was THAT bad...I don't mean to insult louisianans(having been born in New Orleans myself), but the Katrina/Rita refugees have increased the pressure on our overworked and understaffed police force to the breaking point. I do know that my little brother no longer feels safe going to a public school system(Cy-Fair district) that at one point was one of the best in the state. Just gives me more reason to get a CHL when I turn 21 in a few months...

I'll ask the mods to close my thread on this over on L&P. Didn't see this one  What the news is saying tonight on TV is that the police are directly attributing this to the "Katrina effect", the influx of criminals from NO that just "set up shop" here. :fire: When my son was attacked in a neighborhood park last year, the Harris County constables said that, although the attackers were local, there was also a sort of overflow effect, where the Houston badboys got bumped into new territories by the NO badboys and then themselves moved into new neighborhoods. Like OURS. :fire:

Mayor White is one of the members of Bloomberg's anti-gun mayor group. Not sure how enthusiastically he's involved though; he certainly hasn't done anything to try and block the gun shows in the Convention Center.

This is why I carry. Everywhere.

Durn it Whatbrick, it's been since the last of march, and not a word! Is there anybody I can call about it?

Only Philadelphia now has a higher homicide rate than Houston on the list of the nation's 10 largest cities. San Antonio ranks seventh on the list, while Dallas is fifth.

This is just a 1-10 rating of the largest US cities and their murder rate per 100k.

Oh yea and arthurcw, if you want the #1 spot based on ALL cities you are going to have a heck of an uphill battle with your measly 18.2/100k before you can get near the 35/100k of DC, or 42/100k of baltimore, they could start by banning guns like DC, or issuing CCW only to royalty like here in MD, in fact those Houston politicos would have to pry the title out of a few hundred cold dead unarmed and morally superior hands

We're hungry! We are committed! If it weren't for that pesky preemption, I'm sure we'd be disarmed so our betters could take more care of us. Darn those rural gun mongers!

Someone play “Eye of the Tiger”.

I have no idea how my license got through so quickly, but here's a few ways you can check on its progress if it's a new application:

  1. DPS website: Link to Application Status - You should've received an snail-mail letter that tells you about this form, and it'll have a personal PIN than you can use to access your application status. It's vague but it will let you know if it's still being processed or not.
  2. Email: [email protected]
  3. Phone: 1-800-224-5744

I was as surprised as anyone when I found it in the mail as soon as I did. I wish I could read the bureaucratic tea-leaves well enough to give you a definitive answer.

Whoa, whoa...if they disarm us then how can we start shooting each other maniacally? If we're gonna reach #1 then there needs to be a concerted effort here.

First we are at the top of the list for fatest city in America now this :rolleyes:Maybe that will keep the tourist out and traffic down :D

....perhaps it might be wiser just to consider another place to live. Houston was once a great town, but to me it now more increasingly resembles a third world nation. The culture and quality of the many once nice areas to shop, live, and visit have been on a steady decline. It's not a bad town.....but the point is that there are so many nicer places to live.

I moved to Spring, 20 miles farther toward Dallas 8 years ago. So far crime has not followed me. My subdivion has had two reported crimes in all that time, considering it is a mobile home park, I find that amazing.A bicycle theft and a minor assault .I atribute that to the owner, she refuses to rent to white trash, other than myself, of course. We do have several from New Orleans who came here to escape Katrina, very nice people regardless of their color.
