How about some heavy hitters.

44SPL my heavy hitter.

As far as big boomers... these are what I have, now...

.41MAG... Dan Wesson, S&W 58 and 57...

I've also got a Ruger Vaquero .45 Colt that has had it's share of Big Loads, but I don't use it like that, anymore...

Ruger Bisley .41 (top) has, sadly, moved on down the trail. It had no end of problems and I got aggravated with it and sold it off. It was one of my Wish List pistols that I hope to replace some day.

I once fired the 4” 500 with only ear plugs (I always wear double hearing protection). That permanently damaged my hearing

Just got the 29-2 back from Gunsmith. I didn’t think it could be better…. Yet super nice action job, cut forcing cone and tuned up cylinder end Shake with a shim. Really is Very Very nice. It’s a 1979 model- I can’t imagine what the older ones are like.
With 1200fps Reloads of around 18gr 2400 (Check your Books) 70 yard shots on standing up pieces of firewood, off hand isn’t to difficult 9C76D06B-921E-4266-8D9A-AE37B4FA98C2.jpeg

Regarding the heavy hitters, especially
the .480 and .500, how many of you
owners have shot them out-of-doors
and without hearing protection? What's
the experience?

Just wondering what it is like if you were
carrying such heavy hitters and faced
the need to defend yourself in a sudden
dangerous situation.

Second question involves the frequency
of firing full charge loads and what the
wrists and forearms and elbows feel like
after a session, say 5, 10 or 15 rounds?

I have a S&W 500, and I made the mistake of shooting it once without earplugs. Needless to say, won’t be doing that again. Took a while for the ringing to stop in my ears, and I’m not that old (39). As far as recoil, like was mentioned, the X frame is a chunk of steel that mitigates the recoil nicely. The concussion from firing is what usually bothers me more than any recoil. And it’s not a muzzle flip kind of recoil, it drives the frame back towards you. Like a handheld rifle

The single most accurate firearm I’ve ever shot- And I have some custom build high quality rifles

Yup, that muzzle break on the X-frames produces a ridiculously harsh report. I replaced mine with a blank, and it helps. But I still shoot it with plugs and muffs.
