I have been looking at some Yugo SKS on the net for about $300. They are rated NRA good to very good and still packed in cosmoline. What do y'all think. Are these good guns or are there other SKS's out there that are better. Thanks Don

SKS

They are fine rifles and the price is about right.
I don't like the grenade launcher because it makes the balance too front heavy. There is a Yugo without the launcher but they are a bit harder to find.
One leads to another and you'll soon be searching for others for your collection. I had five but I'm now down to one 'cause I needed some cash.
Ammo used to be dirt cheap and shooting a few hundred rounds wasn't unheard of.
All that went away in '08.

I loved my yugo sks the nicest part is once you have a scope on there you can turn the gas off and have a single shot that is manually ejected, with some handloads i was able to achieve 1.5in groups at 100yds if i had money id buy another right away.

They aren't bad guns, but Saigas are about in the same ballpark, and AK's are just a little more.

I have a 59/66 (with launcher) and I got it packed in cosmoline too, and it is a good quality rifle. Mine has 13 hash marks on the butt (!) and has B I L E carved into it. If anyone knows what language that might be or what it says I'd appreciate it :)

Norincos are chrome lined and shoot and balance well. The Russian SKSs are usually sought after because of better perceived quality; I do not know for I do not own a Russian. But I was so impressed with my first Norinco when another became available I bought it. Both are great shooters.

I had one, skip it.

The Yugo has all that added crap on the end, adding weight, length and nonsense to an otherwise decent gun. It took five hours with a steam wand and two rolls of paper towels to get all that :banghead: cosmoline off. I even had to boil the smaller parts in water.

After a while I started getting light strikes. Finally it just failed to strike the primer and found a large sliver of chrome material lodged in the pin channel.

It wouldn't feed HP Wolf ammo, only FMJ. The flatter point would hit the chamber face and stick there.

I finally had enough and bought a Saiga.

The Yugo SKS do not have a chrome lined bore, but are good rifles "IF" you find one with a good bore. If abused and not cleaned properly the gas valve for the grenade launcher can leak and cause ejection problems.

Your best bet is to find one that went through arsenal reconditioning or overhaul. I have a Yugo 59/66 and a Norinco SKS and both are good shooters and both have like new barrels. ;)

And of course your gonna hear that one bad apple in every gun on this planet, but the yugo sks in my opinion is more of a swiss army knife of sks's its got nite sights, grenade launcher which when done properly is a nice compensator, grenade sights which just look cool, and a gas tube shut off which like i said increases accuracy greatly, and also has the sweet blade bayonet and i never had issues with soft points,HP, or FMJ's they all fed great thru that rifle.

gotta agree with gunnerboy. I really like my Yugo SKS great shooter once I got all the cosmoline off. When the wife signs off I will get another to "bubba" up. Plastic stock, 30 rd mag, scope, make it awesome but for now I can't get over how cool the Yugo looks stock.

Samco still offers the Yugo with No grenade launcher., in addition to the standard type.
The Russian SKS seems to have the best assets, other than costing more than most other types.
My Norinco is kept pretty clean and has stovebolts, but not often.

Have read complaints about some triggers on actual Russians being very stiff, but compared to what, various SKS from other countries?

I own one but I prefer the chinese or russians, nothing to do with function or accuracy. The yugo's just seem.......klunky to me. I would swap it for a good chinese or russian in a heartbeat.

Nothing wrong with it, it just doesn't feel right to me. Although I do favor carbines so that probably explains it.

By the way, you can buy a golf ball launcher for the 59/66. I've always said I wanted one, maybe it's time to launch some golfballs:)

A very few years ago I bought three Yugo cracked stock SKS for the incredible price of $99 ea. from Centerfire Systems. I should have bought THIRTY. They all cleaned up easily (cosmoline clean up is simple if you know how), the cracks in the stocks were very minor, and the bores were all perfect.
I repaired the cracks and glass bedded the rifles at the same time. One I gave to my godson, one I left as-issued, and the other I installed a Tech Sight on. The one with the Tech Site will do 2" 5-shot groups at 100 yds. while the one with issue sights 3" or so...both with Wolf ammo.
I like them because they're built of milled parts as oppossed to stamped.

Plus one on the Yugo heavy gauge barrel. High quality carbon steel , too.

Aim has rebarreled yugos but at 327 they are expensive. On the other hand, it might cost 80 bucks to pull all that grenade crap off properly. I would not want a grenade yugo.

yugo SKS are nice rifles if you buy one in good condition. If that little bitty piece of metal, aka grenade launcher, is too much weight for you, then you have much more serious issues that need to be addressed. The bore is not chrome lined so if you shoot corrosive surplus ammo, you need to clean right after shooting....chris3

Its true the grenade launcher of the Yugo is a bit heavy but thats the cool factor of the gun. The m 59 version is more sought after and they all shoot pretty good.

I have a couple Yugo SKS rifles presently. One is all but mint by looks and one is a real beater, looks like it was dragged behind a tank for a year.:D They are both reliable and fairly accurate. Not a MOA firearm but for what they are I was surprised with the results when I first fired them. Better than some commercial rifles on the market and are minute of deer for sure. The good one will average 2 inch groups, better on a good day with hand loaded tuned ammo. The rough one will shoot almost as well but looks like, well crap.:D Makes a great tractor/wheeler gun as I can't damage it any worse. I did take the bayonet off that one to save a little weight. Might cut the lower mount off also as the thing will catch on things when removing it from behind the seat of the truck sometimes. All in all they both were a bargain at less than $100 each when I got them about 4 years ago..

Go M59 Yugo and you won't be disappointed (just make sure it's not shot-out or rusted).
