I'm thinking about getting a M70 SG in .270 and have a couple of questions. There aren't any available in my are so I'm pretty much limited to ordering one sight unseen. Is the wood on the SG consistently very high grade, or is it hit and miss? Also, how is the overall quality of the current FN M70's?

Also, I know there are a lot of other nice rifles out there for money, but I'm pretty well settled on a M70 at this point. This will be my first "nice" rifle and I just want to be sure that the extra cost for the SG is money well spent.

Ask Geno about his. His first one was a dud, but IIRC they corrected his problems. I have no experience with them, but I rather like the new M-70s, however I think the Featherweight is the model for me (especially since I want a 7mm-08Rem.).

:)

The Featherweight model is so much nicer. I had a supergrade at work and I sent it back because the recoil pad was fitted pretty poorly, the ebony tip was not flush with the stock, and I was entirely not impressed. I've seen CZ 550's that had nicer stocks that the supergrade. Not worth the money at all.

Check it over before you buy it. Yes, Winchester made mine right...completely replaced it. The replacement is very nice. I was impressed enough by their commitment that I purchased one of the new M70 Stealths.

One observation I would make, is that I absolutely can not tell you which rifles' (my M70s' or my M700s') bore is more smooth and resistant to fouling. My 3 Remington 700s, and my 2 M70s have the very best barrels I ever have owned! I do not have to use a brush to clean them! I just run an oiled patch through 1 time, and presto...clean bore!
