Well, with the few I've dealt with, one was horrible and did bad quality work. I had him do a simple sling stud install and he drilled the holes off center. I was a little upset with the work to say the least, but at least it didn't cost too much. I honestly could have done a better job myself and I learned never to pay anyone to do something like this again.

The next smith has done okay work, and has great prices and what he has done for me he has done on the spot. However, he's told me some stuff I know not to be true so it kind of makes me doubt him. He has also told me that what I thought was the problem was not, yet after I kept telling him just to try what I requested it fixed the problem.

The next one mounted a scope for me, and the scope was not mounted straight at all. I had to go back and re mount it.

One builds custom guns here, but I'm not sure if he even works on regular guns or not. I had him look at a barrel for me with a bore scope. He did it on the spot and for free. This is the best one I know of, but like I said, I think he mainly just builds custom guns and not a lot of work. At least that's the impression I get.

The last but not least also mounted a scope, and he did an okay job. No complaints there, but he didn't do anything special either. I know this place has a problem with keeping guns for months though for work, and being really expensive on top of that. The owner of this shop is also very unfriendly too, so I refuse to go there any longer.

That said, I've not really run into one I'd trust to do anything major really. I don't even know of any I'd really trust to do anything minor. It's a shame as I'd like to know a quality smith, but I've not met one yet other than maybe the guy that builds custom guns.

I think good work that people can be proud of is a thing of the past.

It's not a thing of the past, there are more highly talented gunsmiths in this country than ever before. Unfortunately there are probably also more butchers. Which is why I only trust those who are widely recognized for their work and also why I handle the minor stuff myself.
