How Confident Are You With Your EDC?

I'm as confident as I can be with my shield 9. That doesn't mean I can't lose a gunfight. Lately I have given some thought to obtaining a 380- something like a Ruger LCP, which is a gun/caliber I normally recommend against. Why? as a "gym" gun. When I go to the dojo 3 nights a week (as well as travel to/from) I am wearing my "workout clothes"- MMA shorts with a velcro side pocket (designed for storage of a mouth guard) and a sleeveless shirt. So I am basically in my underwear. The small 380 in the side pocket- while inferior to my shield 9- (I also discourage pocket carry) is more practical to have on me if I need to stop at a store enroute, or for some unforeseeable situation, such as last week when I stopped on a little-travelled road on the way home to check on a couple having some vehicle problems.

I wear the new Army PT pants to the gym and carry a Glock 43 in a pocket holster. I was surprised at how sturdy they are.

Lately my EDC has been chambered in a caliber designed to disable/kill a horse weighing between 900 to 1100 pounds. So assuming I put the rounds on target I'm extremely confident in it's ability to put down 200 or even 300 pound human.

As @CDW4ME tells us frequently, if you don't trust your equipment you shouldn't be carrying it.

I carry the same Glock 19 I carried at work for several years.

I had recurring training from my employer and several private classes. I've also actually had to defend myself (never had to shoot anyone)

BUT the times I had to defend myself I was most decidedly NOT confident. In fact I damn near pissed my pants.

I do have confidence in my equipment because I've tried it and trained with it. I have confidence in my training because every time I had to defend myself I responded in accordance with my training (except the almost pissing my pants part) but I also know I can do everything right and still die.

Meh...I'm confident that at almost 70 I'm much better off with my CZ P 07 IWB than without it. I can draw and fire in less than a second, make hits (when nobody is shooting at me), have 15 rds in the gun and have spare 17 rd mags around. I am much more confident in my ability to avoid gunfights in most situations. Joe

I have a reasonable degree of confidence in my abilities with my CCW guns. I try to practice once a week (not always possible). Various drills, from 5 to 25 yards, all from the holster, 50 rounds total, and every reload is done at speed from the mag pouch. There's also dry fire practice, usually once a week, some involving moving off the X whilst drawing and firing.

So yeah, reasonably confident. I only occasionally feel like I'd totally flub a draw, accidentally drop the mag, miss repeatedly at close range, or generally fail in some way or another. But I do recognize any of those things could happen.

I can handle the gun, and I have trained for all the rest, but I cannot really assess how confident I am.

The question is how confident you are with your EDC. That pertains to the equipment and ability.

No ones asking about your confidence in coming out of a SD situation in a positive light. There's a difference, and no one can truly know the latter.

I can't separate the two in my mind.

I mean, my gun is a well maintained, proven Glock 19. I've had training. I get practice. I've even had experience.

I could still screw up and get killed next time

So you're confident in your gear/ability. That is all.

This is not about winning a gunfight or SD scenario.

The two cannot be separated.

"EDC" has to do with self defense--not "going shooting".

That's what an "EDC" is for. Period.

You keep trying and keep missing the bar.

I'll try to put it in layman's terms.

You ask a youth basketball team their ability/confidence to play the game. They all emphatically claim they can play and are confident in that.

That's different than asking them if they are confident they're going to beat the other team.

When it comes to ability confidence in using one's EDC, "playing the game" involves
  • The immediate detection of a threat.
  • Fast decision-making.
  • immediate, effective action.
  • Movement to enable clear shots and a backstop.
  • The draw.
  • The shoot/no-shoot decision,
  • Shooting rapidly with combat accuracy.

The question is how confident you are in those things, as well as your gear, not whether you will be able to come out on top of an encounter.

I don't think I can make it any clearer.

Having confidence in your gear and abilities is not at all the same as asking if your confident you will win a SD situation.

They are absolutely two different questions and no one can truly answer the latter.

We're getting waaaaay off topic and if the pestering continues I would ask that a mod just locks this.
