How customized are your firearms?

Shotgun bone stock.

Pistols: I generally do something with the grips, Glocks get Talons; I like a laser and night sights on anything remotely SD.

Rifles just optics which I don't consider modified.

I just started getting into 10/22's. I bought one, put it ins a Knoxx Axiom stock, slapped on a Mueller APV, and now I have a barrel and two stage trigger from Kidd on the way. Now I have two mroe 10/22's, one will be modded to look like a M1 Carbine and the other is a "target model" and will sport a scope and might have a hornet or another Kidd trigger, dependiong on how I feel about dropping that much cash on a .22 rifle.

I've thought of one thing I would (given unlimited funds) *like* to do to any guns I have with exposed hammers: make them ring hammers. Why? I don't know. Do ring hammers serve any but an aesthetic purpose? I don't know. I do know that I like their look better than I do spur hammers.

(Am I missing something, btw? Are there any instances where a ring hammer is a liability?)

I've got a few that have had some work done on them beyond the usual grip changes:

S&W 360J - rechambered to 9mm (9x23), cut for moonclips, chamfered forcing cone, action job, 1/2 bobbed hammer, trigger smoothed/rounded/polished, fiber optic front sight, cylinder refinished with NP3, CT laser grips.
SDC10436.jpg

S&W 586 L-Comp - This is a PC gun but it needed a couple of little touches to make it right for me. The charge holes have been more aggressively chamfered, the front of the cylinder beveled just a bit, trigger smoothed and rounded, trigger and hammer bright polished, after the work was done I had it parkerized and added a set of Nill grips.
SDC10805.jpg

Detonics CombatMaster - Trigger guard undercut, mainspring housing shaved and recontoured, all edges broken, 11deg crown on muzzle, hammer half bobbed, Fusion carbon fiber trigger, entire gun bright polished except topstrap which is bead blasted, grips are thin alumagrips.
SDC11371.jpg

Savage MKII BV - Muzzle recrowned deep 11deg, parkerized, pillar bedded in Sharp Shooter Supply stock. Wicked accurate.
SDC10399.jpg

S&W 1917/1937 Brazilian - This gun is an old custom, all I've done is add the grips. It's had the barrel cut down and recrowned, front sight rewelded and recontoured, hammer bobbed and serrated, action job. I added the bonded ivory grips.

The only NEW gun I have bought in several decades is a Colt Rain Gun in January. I looked at all the features I wanted on a 1911 and came up with this one. Much cheaper than adding them. The only changes I have made is the Pachmyer wrap around grip and a MSH with the same type of rubber on the back. This I robbed off an old 1911 parts gun.

I've got a set of Ebony grips on order for my Astra A90. The plastic ones cracked... so yeah :D Gives me reason for new ones!

Don't know the species, but the wood has a chocolate color with jet black grainage. Yumm!

They have my very own unique set of fingerprints on them. Other than that no modifications other than grips, and optics.

Every Smith & Wesson I own I have done my own trigger work on... (I really did go to school for that)... Some of match guns are true "Race Guns" of their day... Douglas or Shilen Barrels, Bo-Mar Ribs... Lots of the them I have either added Houge Grips or spent a few hours with the Dremel tool reshaping oversize factory rosewoods to fit my hand..

My AR's a few bolt-ons... nothing real extravagant.. My Mini's, shortened one to 16".. Marlin Lever in 44mag, Shortened to 16", added low 1.5X Leopold..

Several of my .30 cal Bolt guns have been re barreled with #5 taper Lilja's 3 groove 1-12 and a few wildcats.... Two have had stocks replaced with composites and 20MOA ramps... 4.5X14 IR mildots.. one cut in a ..330 Tight Neck, will shoot just a hair over 1/4MOA... Crowns reworked with cut-in muzzle brakes,, (15 evenly spaced holes .127 dia. holes cut @ 11degrees on a wire EDM..What recoil?)

I have a .338-300 Rem Ultra Mag wildcat on a 700 action with a Lilja Barrel that has been fluted, but other than the fluting and the muzzle brake EDMed into the end, it looks pretty bone stock... Good Shooter, however on small doses... it does shove a mite..

All of my 1911 style pistols have had throat work, Three of them have had all the edges broke, front and back straps checkered, sight changes, bushings changed, spring kits, ambidextrous safeties, Two of the safeties cut to work with CT lazer Grips...

I really need to post some of this from the house where I can take some pics... kinda hard to do from the office...

One thing I always do, if a rifle doesn't have it already, is to set it up to use 1 1/4" sling swivels on the bottom of the rifle, so I can use a GI web sling with it. What can I say, I'm an Appleseed shoot boss and I love the benefits of a sling as a marksmanship aid. I even set an AK up like this... I gave it a railed forearm and a QD sling swivel up front. I have a couple 10/22s that I set up as training rifles for Appleseed with studs, swivels, slings, tech sights/scope, auto bolt release, and target hammer. I have a scope mount and adjustable cheek riser for my M1A, a side saddle shell holder for my M500, and a pocket clip for my Kel Tec .380. However, my M-1 Garand and CZ-452 are bone stock.

I've been thinking about doing some real personalization on some of my rifles... maybe a custom rattle can camo job, and/or some cool libertarian phrase painted on the stock, like a latin motto or something. Maybe embroider some stuff on my slings. You know, something different to set my stuff apart.

This custom built M14S Tanker took close to 2years to complete, but turned out to be a very satisfying project in the end......

I was extremely meticulous/picky when it came to the parts for this rifle.

NOS/Like new only.

Here is the parts list:

Receiver : M14S Norinco

Barrel : Criterion 18.5in std contour chrome lined with finished 762mm NATO chamber. (LRB ARMS)

Bolt : NIW TRW along with NIW bolt guts to include a chrome firing pin. Headsapace = 1.633

Trigger group = All new Winchester

Gas cylinder = New outa the can Winchester along with the rest of the gas system minus a few parts mentioned below.

Gas piston= Sadlak tin coated

Gas lock = SEI Gas lock front sight (hooded)

Rear sight assembly = WRA

Op-rod = Norinco (1piece forged unit similar to TRW op-rods)

Op-rod spring = New GI

Op-rod spring guide = Sadlak

Bolt stop assembly = Norinco

Flash hider = SEI direct connect Vortex

Scope mount = An early "split rail" ARMS #18.

Hand-guard = GI with hg clip. Painted it with Krylon camo black.

Stock assembly = KMT butt-plate , and the stock itself is an early (without any checkering) synthetic GI. Also filled in the selector lever hole, prepped it for paint, and hit it up with Krylon's camo brown. GI M14 sling...and yes...I have it on backwards as I like it that away.

She will shoot right along with a factory M1A loaded, but for less weight, better balance, and 39in of OAL vs 44in.
Already paid for itself and then some in pork/venison. Also dumped a few coyotes trying to get in the chicken house too boot!

Here she is next to her sister. (SAI M1A-A1 Bush rifle built from the factory with all USGI parts ...TRW TG/bolt/op-rod) .... minus bbl. Did the stock up myself just like the one on the M14S above.....

SANY1257.jpg

Both of them along with SAI XD service...

I was going to build up another using an LRB Arms M14SA receiver (once I'm back from a current deployment), but found the following rifle for sale that was already built the same way I was gonna build it anyways, so......

LRBM14SABushrifle.jpg

My next creation will be an all TRW build using a 762MM forged receiver/ Criterion bbl, or an SEI receiver along with one of their 18in tubes.

Then again..... those LRB M25 receivers are kinda sweet.....:)

I might need some more parts after all.

Most of mine have some sort of customization, be in accessories or paint jobs. I haven't gotten into trigger jobs or mechanical whatnots, just cosmetics.

a few of my collector type rifles and piotols will stay as is but everything else is full blown custom.
there isn't an off the shelf sporting rifle for under $3500 imho that doesn't still need at least $1500 in work before i would be happy with it.

I have done at least a little work on every gun I own. Even if its just installing a scope or swapping grips, I get as much enjoyment out of working on my guns as shooting them. And yes, they all still work! ;)

Three of my guns are pretty customized the rest are mostly stock.

FN PBR XP with lots of mods including some trigger work and a polished bolt, McMillan stock and CDI Precision bottom metal.
FNPBRXP-1.gif

My BHP was customized by legendary gunsmith Jim Hoag.
BrowningHP-1.jpg

My Daniel Defense AR has started life as just a standard DDXV but I added a lot to it including the E-Z Car rail and Magpul parts.
DD-16.jpg

I also customized my S&W 3914 by replacing the stock grips with rubber ones and swapping out the sights with night sights.

I don't know if "customized" is the right word, I'm a southpaw and have been over time modifying my Sig 226 to be more south-paw friendly, as is the mag release and a few other minor things have been swapped over, nothing major.
