So I noticed that CMP has Field Grade M1 Garands for $495, and I want to buy one :)

I have a few questions, how do I join CMP and buy one, and is it taking advantage of the system to join motivated mainly buy a Grand?

Thanks for any input!

Ok, so now I guess I have to figure out a a CMP affiliated club to join, and meet the marksmanship requirement. If i get one of the safety instructors at my range to sign off that they have seen me shoot in a safe manner will that meet the marksmanship requirement?

Qualifying for CMP

Shooting in a Club sponsored High Power match and getting a score card, doesn't matter how well you shoot, qualifies you. I am a member of the TRSA, Texas State Rifle Association and that qualifies as a club, if you are over 65? the shooting requirement is waived, have to read the rules again.

If you have a Curio & Relic license they waive some of the rules also.

It is worth checking out.

As for the club requirement, you have the option of joining the Garand collectors club, the carbine collectors club, or any recognized veterans group like the American Legion, VFW, etc. A concealed carry license counts as the marksmanship requirement as well. A copy of a passport counts for citizenship as well as a birth certificate.

Please though, if you're ordering the lowest price Garand, don't be like some of the folks that creep up over there from time to time complaining that the gun they bought didn't look like a rifle "only used by a little old lady who took it to church every Sunday." You'd think people would appreciate having access to firearms at a reasonable price when great looking ones bring triple that price on the open market, but...

If you can't go to the store to pick out a field grade, I would save up another hundred bucks and get a service grade. Don't forget to get some ammo.

Take a look at the CMP forums too (I think they are down again, but when they are back up take a look) - there is a ton of knowledge there, and lots to learn. Lots of guys have already asked other questions you are likely to ask too.

Appleseed and the RWVA will qualify you, and you won't be in a catch-22 of needing a Garand to do an event so you can buy a Garand.

A CC permit flies as of last month.
The CMP FAQ pages are quite helpful, most people are closer to qualifying than they think.

Anyone know if their accepting of a CCW permit as proof of experience has any conditions? Would a Mass LTC qualify?

Yes CCW is accepted for firearms portion of qualification
I suggest joining this club, the M1 Collectors Club https://m1collectorsclub.com/Home.php Its only $14.00 to join and unlike the GCA it runs for one year from when you join not from the time you join until Sept.

Even though it is a long drive from Texas, When I am able to afford my first M1 I want to take a vacation and make the drive, enjoy the scenery, catch a few roadside diners, pick out my own rifle, and just make a nice road trip out of it. And make sure I plan enough cash for extras, like ammo!

It is a great road trip from Texas, I don't recommend it in July as I did though...

I understand that ordering a Svc Grade is very good for getting a nice specimen. You can, however, get an equally high-performing Field Grd if you visit the store that will look as good with a little TLC on the wood. You may find a gem that just looks bad (as I did) by getting there early and enlisting the help of one of the floor staff. Some of the Garands are very high-grade mechanically but have been wedded to ugly stocks in order to put them on a rack with more room and for no other reason. I am convinced this was the case with mine. I suggest making the trip: memories, fun, looking over hundreds of Garands and .30carbines, and picking out your very own (plus not having to wait on the CMP to deliver!) is more than worth it. Just get ALL your paperwork in order first!

Have fun!
