How do I improve a Savage pre-accutrigger?

I had a great time at the gun show this weekend, and came home with a Savage Model 12 Heavy barrel. However, it's pre-accutrigger, and the pull's a little hard.

Is there a simple (I'm not a gunsmith) way to improve it at home? Is there a drop in trigger/hammer/sear that will lower the pull or even make it adjustable? It's perfectly crisp, just hard.

You can adjust them but I don't have the instruction here at the moment. Maybe someone else can provide a link that will tell you how.

Yours might be adjustable. You need to break it down and look for a screw that allows you to adjust let off. This will be located on the front of the trigger arm, and allows you to increase or decrease the sear/trigger contact. In any case, there is a screw that holds a piano-wire style spring that you can use to adjust weight of pull. You can make it much lighter, but be careful on adjusting to be certain you don't adjust too light. Cock the rifle (unchambered, of course) and give it a pretty good blow to the butt to make sure the rifle won't fire with a good jar. This is for any rifle you adjust, by the way, and not just for Savage.

I replaced my pre-Accutrigger with a unit from Sharp Shooter. Adjustable from 2½ pounds down to a few ounces. I keep it set near the top of its range, as I don't want to drop below 2 pounds on a hunting rifle.

The spring that controls weight of pull is a straight wire that runs horizontally on the right side of the trigger. One end of the wire spring is trapped by a small set screw with a couple notches on it. To reduce the pull, loosen that set screw a notch or 2 to take some tension off the spring. You must leave some tension on the spring or else the rifle will fire when bumped. To assure your adjustment is safe. Work the bolt and smack the side of the action with a rubber mallet to make sure it doesn't fire.

The HB rigs have SSS triggers, the sporters have Timneys set at 3 1/2 pounds. I'm as happy asa clam......Essex

Since I just spent all my money on the rifle, I'll be trying the home version. Ash and DnPRK, do know of a web site that has pictures to help the uninitiated, like myself? I'll do some searching tomorrow at work when I'm not limited to 26.4 Kbps.

The aftermarket triggers look great, maybe I'll get one for Christmas.

Rifle Basix makes an excellent replacement trigger for Savage and a number of other rifles.
Easy to install and reliable, this is the best trigger going without spending an arm and a leg.
I have had several customers replace the Accu-trigger with a Rifle Basix after the knife like edge on the insert began to cause blisters and discomfort.
Nobody complains about these triggers once they are installed.
Fairly easy to do too.

A SAV-1 adjustable from 1 lb to 3 lb. is about $75.00

The better, more adjustable SAV-2, 4 oz to 3 lbs, is about $130.00. HTH

I found that it was not worth the effort to play with the trigger, just buy one of the after market ones.
