I have recently obtained my C&R license. I was once told that you cannot purchase C&R handguns the same way that you purchase C&R rifles. This person told me that in order to purchase a C&R handgun I would have to have it shipped to a class I FFL dealer and have them transfer it to me. Is this true?

Not by the federal C&R rules, C&R pistols and C&R rifles are not treated any different by federal rules.

However your state rules may vary. What state are you in?

I live in WI

I live in Wisconsin. I know that the state has a 48 hour waiting period for a background check. But isn't the background check normal for any state background check.

The C&R license lets you bypass background checks -- or should, if the dealer you're buying from knows what he's doing. All you need to do is give the dealer a copy of your FFL. (Some states may have special requirements about handgun transfers that are more restrictive than the federal guidelines, and that's allowed...)

The only real difference between Long Guns and hand guns is that one can be shipped by mail (long guns) and the other can't.... when dealing in interstate transfers.

Bull Feathers!

No difference between C&R Long guns and Handguns. If they qualify as C&R they can be shipped directly to a C&R holder.

You've already passed a Federal Background check.

Check with one of the big C&R vendors, and see if they will ship to your locale. Outfits like J&G, Century, etc. and not willing to break any state or local laws.

That said, I have never heard anything about it being prohibited to ship a C&R handgun to Wisconsin, but if you trust an anonymous person on an internet message board then expect their advice to worth exactly what you pay for it!

It is perfectly legal on a federal level to receive handguns with a C&R.

When you got your C&R, you should have gotten a book with all the relevant state firearm laws that the BATFE wants you to follow.

Karlsgunbunker- State laws can vary on C&R. New Jersey doesn't recognize C&R at all. CA only allows C&R holders to receive long guns while pistols must still go through 001 dealer for transfer.

I don't know about Wisconsin. See if the state AG web site has links to gun laws regarding C&R.

Some dealers also have a policy that C&R handguns must go through an 01 FFL in certain states. When I got my C&R, I contacted a number of online retailers about shipping C&R handguns. All but two indicated that they'd ship directly to me.

Those waiting periods are only for "regular buyers" your FFL pre-empts those, just send a copy of it in with your order.

Actually, 01 dealers are allowed to ship handguns via the Post Office. 03 collectors are not and must use a common carrier.

AFASANO- Again, he needs to check state laws. The waiting period he mentioned is a state law and having an FFL doesn't necessarily negate that requirement unless state law says that it does.
