How do I remove a stupid sticker

De-solv-it

Citrus based, works great- never seen it damage anything, even safe for use on humans.

Lighter fluid (or VM&P Naphtha) will remove stickers. Sometimes it makes a gooey mess, but I have yet to see it damage any surface. I've used it for forty years in my trophy business.

Let it soak in, remove the sticker, and then clean up the goo with a paper towel and more naphtha.
That's what I've been using for years and it has never harmed anything.

I think my sweat is particularly acidic :).

Usually when I have a difficult sticker I'll peel it off as best I can, and what's left I try to rub off with my thumb. Usually it'll slowly start to "stack" up. Once you get most of it rolled into a line just come from the opposite direction and most of it will condense into a small ball you can just pick off. Then just wipe it with a cloth.

Can take a good while to get it all off (I've had to work at some of them for 20-30 minutes) but whenever I want to try and avoid damaging something beneath the glue this virtually always works and never causes any damage.

Be careful with acetone. TEST FIRST.
Regardless of what you try, some good common sense there. Find a small inconspicuous spot and apply whatever the candidate is. Once you know the stuff won't eat the stock material then give it a shot.

If it's a synthetic stock wet a rag and let it sit on it for 15-20 minutes.
Most adhesives are water based and will soften if moistened.
Should wipe right off....

I didn't have the guts to try hairspray, as the stock I was referring to in myy last post is a wood stock. I used a hair dryer and loosened up the glue. It took more time than I would have expected, and the sticker still came off in small pieces. To get the glue residue off, i used some Hoppes #9, as mentioned above, which worked rather well. After it dried, I wiped the whole wood stock down with a product I have called Stock Slick. It is a terrific product, but unfortunately not made anymore.

In the end, the stock looked much better than when it came from the factory

Years ago, say about 1976, I bought a brand new Marlin 39. It has a sticker on the fore end that said "Genuine Walnut." When I peeled it off, the finish came off as well. I didn't use anything like is suggested above and probably should have.

If soap & water don't dissolve the adhesive, try some ordinary cooking oil - some goopy stuff that isn't water soluble actually IS oil soluble.
