How do I get into the magazine of a solid frame 1897 to give it a cleaning.
Probably its first cleaning since 1937.

Lets try again. I looked at mine and it does not have the second barrel band nor does yours. Removing the top barrel band and separating the two by pushing forward with the forearm. It might take a "good" nudge to separate them.
At the top of the mag tube there two little screws. When you remove them the cap may fly off and the spring with it. Hold onto the cap:cool:.

I use a dowel with steel wool and a drill. I rinse in my parts washer, blow dry, apply good lubricant and put it back on. Clean and polish the follower.
When you put it back together, line up the action bar to slip into the hole in the receiver. Don't worry about "seating" it yet. Screw the tube in, replace the cap and screws, and the barrel band. Pull back smartly on the fore end and the action bar will "hook up" inside.

Should have said this in the beginning. Make sure the shotgun is locked into the "fire" position when you start.

Here take a look quarter turn is all it takes.
Apples & Oranges.

The OP ask about a solid frame 97.
And you are talking about a take-down model 97.

Just follow Red Cents instructions to get the mag spring & follower out.
