How do you fill the ram hole in a 1860 Army barrel?

I know some have plugged the ram hole and slot on 1860 Army barrels after shorting them. Did you glue the plugs in or weld them in? Want to make a snubby.

I would just make the plug a press fit. Welding it could cause damage to the barrel.
