I'm looking for ideas on keeping spare mags organized and identified (which guns they belong to). I have about 20 autos, and multiple spare mags for each. I have them all stacked on one shelf dedicated to mags in my safe and its gettin hard to find which belongs to which :banghead: I was thinking about sandwich bags and labeling the bags. What do the rest of you guys do? Thanks

I just came up with an idea that has so far worked great for me. I bought some of those slide out stacking cubbys and i use each drawer for a particular firearm. So all of the Magazines, holsters, mag pouches, extra parts, etc, go into each drawer. That way, if it is 1911 day I have all the mags and holsters ready to go for that particular weapon. I just open the drawer and everything is ready to go. When I return from the range I just dump all the stuff back into its drawer. So far this has worked really well for me.

Yep - heavy freezer ziplocks in a big bin. Sharpie gun type and mag capacity on the tops and/or white writing panels. (nice to keep clinton range mags separated from normal mags for the same gun)

I bought a gold paint pen and mark the bottom of mine with 1,2,3 small dots, etc. That's just to identify the problem mag if one happens to go bad. But I don't own 20 autos so it's not that much of a problem for me.

I just keep them int he box the gun came with.

Course, I've only got 3 autos that take magazines...

I've got my magazines stored in ziplocs within 3 rubbermaid storage boxes. One is devoted entirely to Glock magazines. Others are distributed more or less by manufacturer to the other two. If I'm not mistaken, they're 1.5 gallon rubbermaid shown here: Rubbermaid Storage Box

I bought them at Wally world (~$3 each IIRC). They're stackable and fairly sturdy.

I bought some plastic "tupperware" containers from the 99 cent store. Each bin is a diff't caliber...So I have 22lr - 9mm - 45 acp - 223 - 308

Rubbermaid storage bins like you get at Target work well, just be sure to throw some dessicant packs in anything you seal up too tight.

Thus far it hasn't been much of a problem for me, but then my collection isn't really large enough to make it so. My mags (and wheelie speedloaders) are just all lined up in front of their respective ammo. And seeing as I have one .45, one 9mm, one .380, and so on ..it would be hard to get them confused. In fact the only two mag fed guns I have that share the same caliber are the FAL and the Enfield.. and those mags would be pretty hard to mix up. In wheelguns, they all use the same speedloader size except for the 7 round ones which again.. kind of obvious to me which one they go to.

I have invested in some of the Dillon Precision utility boxes. I have one with the mags for the pistols I take to the rang on a regular basis, another to store extra mags for a specific (CZ75, BHP, CZ75 Kadet, etc) model, and then use a Dymo label maker to identify which box of mags goes with which pistol.

A Tupperware tub for the smaller-count mags in labeled zip-top baggies is also a lower-cost alternative.

I bought one of those screw and bolt drawer boxes that they sell at Lowe's. It has 36 different compartments and is a couple of feet across and tall. Each drawer holds between 6 and 10 mags. I then put a business card in the front with the name of the gun it goes to.

Organized mags

I pretty much just lump'em together, since all my magazines work fine in all my pistols. (About 170/42 at last count) Well...Except for the ones that go with my newly-aquired Browning High Power...but that's a slam-dunk ID.

I went to Wally World and bought some of those Sterlite plastic cabinets with the pullout drawers. They have all sizes.

That reminds me, I have to buy somemore. Those mags just keep on multiplying.

Freezer bags with the gun they go to marked with a black Sharpie on both sides.

That's what I used. Each pistol has its own zip lock. If you want I can sell you a kit for 50 pistols for $20 shipped CONUS :D

p.s. sharpie not included.

I usually leave the factory mags in the box and feed the gun out of the 'range mag bag'. Gallon or 2 gallon (1911 in 45) bags. I don't own any that I have less than 8 range mags for, and wouldn't consider less.

I use white modelling paint on the back of the mags, I write both Gun & magazine number. This helps me tell the diffrence at a glance as well as identify mags if a problem occurs.

Maybe a white grease pencil will also work.

I shoot for magazine interchangability so that if you grab one that looks about right chances are it's going to work.

My Storms take the same mags. 1911's take the same mags. Glocks take the same mags...

Obviously the Kel-Tec's mags aren't going to fit in any of the above, nor will the AR-15 mags (but I have had my eye on e Kel-Tec PLR-16 for a while)...
