How do you people CCW 1911s??

I have a degree of contempt for the gun magazines telling us repeatedly that a full-size pistol can't be carried. When they do, there's usually a compact pistol on the cover.

It's like car magazines trying to convince you you need three different jeeps to do different things in life. The rule for guns should be the same as jeeps. If you can afford it, go for it. But they all have four wheels.

But I'm superstitious. Especially when I'm hanging my life on the object of superstition. I don't want three different pistols, holsters, triggers, sights, weights, recoils etc kicking around in my brain. I don't want to have to test three different pistols for ammo and reliability. When I have one that works, I will keep it and use it for everything.

It makes me think of the scene in "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" when Michael Caine is walking Steve Martin through the wine cellar, explaining, "This is the best wine in the world." "Great. Drink it." "Oh, no, I can't drink it, it's far to valuable." "Ok, sell it." "I can't sell it, it means far too much to me." I honestly would feel foolish, having a rookie look in my safe, and having him ask me, "But aren't all three of those pistols pretty much the same? Why do you have three of them?" As far as I'm concerned, the only correct response to that question is; "Because I can afford them and I like them." Not "I need three different guns to do the same thing under three different sets of circumstances."

I have one great full-size 1911. I carry it every day, I wear it when in the wilderness, and I will take it with me to war, even if that means leaving it there to avoid customs trouble. It is the pistol that fits me best and does what I tell it to every time.

Comfort is relative. If you aren't used to carrying, a sub-compact....anything will be uncomfortable. If you are a 21 year-old kid with a rambo fetish, a .50 Desert Eagle will make you feel warm and fuzzy under your left armpit. Detemine which pistol fits you and your circumstances best, carry it, and bite the bullet. So to speak. And remember, a longer barrel means better muzzle velocity and sight radius.

I forgot to answer the question, I use a Galco Miami Classic, a fanny pack, and a cheap nylon IWB. (I want to get a Milt Sparks.)

I carry a steel Para Ordnance single stack in a Crossbreed IWB holster. It's not full sized...Officer's Model size... but it is all steel. It's comfortable. When carrying concealed the width of the slide has always bothered me more than the weight of the gun. Barrel length isn't much of a factor, either. With a good holster/belt combo you can conceal a full sized 1911 almost as easily as a compact.

In a Crossbreed Adjustable Tucker. 1911 commander Sc or Springfield Micro Compact. Weight does not seem to be an issue.

My hat is off to those who can CCW 1911 but its not for me even though I'm not a short guy (too much weight and very uncomfortable). And why be uncomfortable (that almost certainly leads to less carry time) when there are viable alternatives?

Don't get me wrong I LOVE MY 1911...But not as my every day carry gun!

Good Belt and VM2

I CCW a Kimber TLE II. I use a good belt and a Sparks VM2. People raved about the holster so I bought one three years ago. Never regretted it once. As I type it's on my hip. Worn it 12-16 hours in a day no problem.

Ok, here's something I wonder about IWB carry. When you sit down, doesn't the gun just jab you in your leg/groin and or stomach at the same time? I mean, I could carry a Kel-tec PLR-16 in my waistband standing, but as soon as I sit, I'm going to get a ball-full-o-barrel.

Appendix carry? I am a..."stocky" guy and I carry mine at 3-4o'clock strong side. Nothing pokes me when I sit.

Nothing pokes me when I sit, even when I have one at 4 o'clock and one at 1 o'clock.

If you have a tool shed, or Dunlop, or both, YMMV. :)

I'm a little guy, 6'4" 240#, by NFL Standards anyway, and I carry a DW Bob Tail Commander, Kimber Custom Compact (Series 1) or a DW Patriot. All Are Steel or Cres (Stainless Steel). My carry rigs are Rafter S 1-1/2" gun belts, and Rafter S IWB or OWB holsters depending on the rest of my attire worn strong side 4:00. I do have an 1-1/4" Rafter S Sharksin in black for Sunday go to meeting wear. The only time this gets to be an issue is when I'm riding in a car for a long period of time. Not a problem in my truck bench seat though. Good belts and good holsters make it quite possible. Only time I have any trouble is when I wear a pair of britches sized for IWB with an OWB rig. I just have to get the excess material in the right place

What's that old Gunfighter's quote?
"Beware of the man with ONE gun, He probably knows how to use it"

Beware the man with one 1911, he's carrying one for a reason.

I have more of an issue with the weight of carrying two additional magazines than I do with the weight of the 1911 itself. For comparison, 25 rounds of .45ACP in three magazines as opposed to 21 rounds of 9MM in two magazines for the P11 I usually carry.

My RIA is carried in a simple nylon GunMate OWB holster.

At Times

I still don't mind CCW'ing a full size 1911; but most of the time I utilize the
comfortable all day carry of a Kimber Stainless Ultra Carry II, carried in a
compact undercover rig from the fine folks over at Kirkpatrick Leather of
Laredo, TX~!;) :D

Slip this in between your waist and pants and run a good gunbelt through the beltloops of the pants and holster. Position it at around 4 o'clock on the strongside hip and you will literally forget it is there. I found out, unfortunately after many wasted dollars, that a good custom holster makes concealed carry a pleasure instead of a chore. I have worn this rig up to 16 hours a day, even having driven my car for 12 hours with it on and it is so comfortable I sometimes forget it's there.

My rig is a Milt Sparks Versa Max 2 carrying my Wilson Combat 4" Professional

I,m only 5'7" short...uh tall, and carry a full size 1911 Kimber Tactical II and love it. It hides well in a CQB blackhawk holster as long as I cant it forwared enough and no one has ever said anything about me "telegraphing" my carry. Also, I have the Ultra carry and Pro Carry and usually allways end up carring a full size 1911. I can shoot all three but prefer the full size and have nop problems with weight or size of the gun. But all mine I carry are alloy framed so that may be a little of a difference. Heck, carry 185gr silvertips, you will have about the same overall weight of mine with 230gr JHP!

Like others have said, carrying a 1911 is a breeze with the right belt and holster. I like the Sparks holsters and the Kramer and Rafter S belts. I put my 1911 in the holster on Saturday morning at 5:00 and took it off that night at 11:00. In between, I drove 500 miles, looked at six houses, ate two meals on the road, and shot a bit on my land. BTW, I am 5'6" and 165 pounds.

ive never owned a 1911 been wanting to but doesnt keeping it cocked and locked wear out the mainspring?

nope...but if you wanna be on the safe side replace it every 5 years with one from wolff gunsprings....cost maybe 8 bucks and 5 minutes of your time

Ill add another thumbs up for Tucker Holsters. I have the "Answer" and love it. I wear it on a Liger belt. The belt is the best bang for buck I have found yet. Ive worn it for the last six months straight off duty and it still looks brand spanking new. My belts usually get that bend in the middle from the belt loop in the small of back area, but not the Liger belt. I also carry a SW Scandium Commander. This rig is the most comfortable by far that Ive ever carried.

HBE COM III

Tried a few different holsters for my SA 1911 5". (Galco SOB, Bianchi Pancake). If you want a GREAT holster that conceals well and is comfortable all day buy a HBE Leatherworks COM III IWB from Eric Larson. My LEO daughter and husband had no idea I was packing a full size 1911 with just a H-D t shirt on and I'm only 5'7". This set up is the cat's meow. Feels great in the car, on the motorcycle and around town. Well worth the wait in my opinion.

I like a good, sturdy belt. Also, suspenders come in handy. I just finally learned this trick last year.

It doesn't take much to help support all of that extra weight.

Weight distribution really helps.

I'm more or less shaped like an upside down pear, so suspenders have always been part of my gear.

I've been wearing an Uncle Mikes 2" Nylon pistol belt for a couple of years now. It goes through my belt loops on my jeans, and supports the gun very well.

I'll get a better belt one of these days, but for now, this one works fine.

A friend that I shoot with carries a 1911 24/7 and he uses a shoulder holster. The other side has 2 magazines on it. You cannot tell that he has it on. It is a Galco.
