How do you prove ownership for guns given to you?

For each of my firearms, I take a blank piece of paper and write the date, the make, model and caliber of the weapon, the serial number, my name, my driver's license number and my signature. I also do a pencil tracing of the serial number. I then place that paper in an envelope and mail it to myself, postmarking it a certain date. The envelopes are then safely stored along with any receipts and bill of sales I have. Though definitely not the most legitimate method, I feel it is enough to prove that the firearms had been in my possession at one point.

As far as proving that I obtained them legally, as long as the SN doesn't come up as stolen then nobody can say they aren't mine.

In Michigan, we have a "safety inspection" which was originally a way to keep track of who had what in the way of handguns. While most disagree with the whole concept of the safety inspection, it also documents all handgun transactions within 10 days of the transaction. The result is a "green card" for all handguns with the record of seller and buyer.
