I was wondering if anyone could tell me how the Glock 17 compares to the Sig P220. Both fit my hand very well, and the trigger's are both comfortable. I was wondering which one is better for price, reliability, quality, etc. Thank you.

I have both and they each have their pluses and minuses. The 220 shoots 45s, while the G17 shoots 9mm. I guess the question back to you will be whether you plan on carrying one of these or if they are just for plinking? For me the 220 is a bit heavy for CCW. Plus the 220 only carries 10 rounds in the mag. The G17 can carry I believe 17 rnds and it's still lighter then the 220.

Overall though, I find the 220 to be more accurate the the G17. My results only. For plinking though, you can't beat the price of 9mm. 45s for plinking will depleat your wallet really fast.

Yeah, you know what, know that you mention the caliber of the 220, I think it might have been the 229 that I held. Cause I could have swore the one I held was a 9mm. Which one has a slimmer grip? I plan on carrying to some extent one day.

G17 reliability is unquestionable.
You just open the flood gate of glock haters.

The 229 is the slimmer model of the 226. I also own this handgun and I enjoy shooting it as well. The 229 comes in 9mm and is MUCH easier to conceal, though still a little bit heavier then the G17. Plus the 229 has a max capacity of 13 in the mag. Between the two, the 229 is smaller, but heavier. But for carrying, I would probably use the G17 as it's lighter and can carry more rounds. If your seriously looking to compare apples to apples you should compare the 229 to the G19. The G19 is the compact model of the G17. It will conceal better.

Thanks. Actually, I've held the G19 and found it to be uncomfortable. I'm not so much worried about it being heavy, but I would probably end up getting the G17 because it's a little cheaper, and it holds more rounds like you said.

I have the Glock M23 and the Sig P220 and prefer the Sig overall. It has better ergonomics and much better caliber. The Glocks are a grip issue with me. That is the only issue i have with Glocks. If both feel good to you than go with the one that feels right. I think the 9mm is more economical for range or plinking fun hence my P228 in 9mm. I do love those big .45ACP rounds though.:)

As much as I love my P220, and I DO carry it daily, I would have to say my Glock is probably the more versatile gun. I do carry it occassionally but I also shoot IDPA with it because of it's trigger pull (no DA/SA), so it tends to get more use than my P220. However, I just feel a bit more secure with a .45 as a carry weapon.

Its not a good comparison. Sort of like saying how does a Camry compare to a BMW 3 series sedan. Both are great but are addressing different needs, use different cartridges, etc.

Have you shot .45s a lot? (Most 220s are .45s.)

The Glock 17 will probably be easier to shoot well, at least at first, if you've not shot a lot of .45.

Well, I don't know if you saw what I posted up there, I actually kinda just discovered it was a 229 I held. They have the same caliber, so I guess now I am actually looking for the comparison between those two. Sorry about the confusion.

Actually, a Glock 17 and a 229 aren't really a good comparison as the G17 is a full-sized versus a 229 which is a compact size. Probably the Sig "P" model that comes closest to the G17 both in size and function is probably the P226 X-Five tactical as it comes with two 15 round mags and an SA trigger most comparable in pull and action to the Glock. Of course there's a considerable price difference between the two.

so I'm assuming the Glock is the camry (slower cartridge, more reliable), and the Sig is the fast one that breaks down all the time? (BMW 3-series)

? :neener:

I own several SIGS including a P220 and a Glock 22. I've shot G17's and G19"s. I will be buying a G19 soon.

Both pistols are extremely reliable. Neither my Glock nor any of my Sigs have ever broken. Both will pretty much feed anything. While the Glock is several hundred dollars cheaper than a Sig, both are a fair value for what you get. More quality = more $. Accuracy OTB usually goes to the SIG. That has also been my experience. Not to say Glocks are inaccurate.

When making comparisons to a G17 I'd compare it to the Sig P225 (single stack 9mm) or the full size P226 in 9mm. Like others, I recommend that you shoot a G17, P226 9mm and maybe a P220 before making a decision. That's the best test of what will work for you as their shooting characteristics are different.

Glock 17

In my opinion if you are a good shot then a 9mm is all you need - some people feel they have to have "POWER", but a 9mm Hydroshock will do any job you need as far as defence, and a little slimmer to carry I believe, and the target loads are fun to just plink with. Best feature - it will never fail on you if kept with some respect. My opinion only, -Smokes-

"Dude get teh Glock 'cuz teh SigS are just gonna rust! When I did the mall security, we..."

Sorry, had to go there :)

I've never liked Glocks because they just don't fit my hand right. Something odd about the grip shape. That said, if I'm careful and slow, I can get excellent accuracy out of one, and I've never seen them choke, except from user error or really cheap ammo.

I have a P220 that I can fire anything (and have!) through, and it still ticks right along. Ergonomics are better for me, and it's more accurate than I'll ever be.

There are several criteria for a carry gun, the most important being reliability, and both guns will serve you well there. Caliber is really a non-issue, as long as you can shoot it well enough to make shots count. At the end of the day, go with the one that fits your hand best.

glock and sig both make excellent pistols. if possible, spend some time at the range and fire both models, then pick the one that works best for you ;)
