Hello,

I have a somewhat embarrassing problem. When I unload my bolt action rifles with hinged floor plates, at least 20% of the time, I drop a cartridge into the mud/snow/water.

Is there a way to do this that just works? There are so many sleight of hand tricks in this hobby so I'm hoping that someone out there has some pointer for me.

ps. Yes, I do prefer detachable double column magazines to hinged floor plates, but I can't put one of those on my mauser. Single column mags are heresy.

i only drop them when there is 10" of snow on the ground or standing in two feet of mud. eastbank.

Same way you get to Carnegie Hall, practice practice practice.

^^ This ^^

I release the floorplate with my left thumb while cupping my right hand under the floorplate. I carefully let the floorplate open, and the rounds drop right into my hand, but it takes some practice.

Hmm never had a problem with mine

I just hold it closed with my index finger as I hit the release with my thumb and then very slowly open it as the rounds fall into the palm of my hand.

Roll gun over so floor plate faces up. Open floor plate, roll back over with cupped hand over the open box.

+1 for that method. I do the same thing but I do it with the rifle on its side at and slightly upward, then just roll it back downward with my hand over the box.

Turn the rifle on it's side and when you push the button don't let the floor plate swing open. Just catch the floor plate with the fingers on your opposite hand as it opens and then open it slowly with the other hand so the cartridges fall out into your hand. I can do it in the dark with gloves on and I very seldom drop a cartridge. My big hands and long fingers probably help!

I tried the upside down technique a while ago. It felt great at first, but after a week in the field with a lot of moist and shooting, the mag well kind of got a little bit rusty and sticky, and sometimes the rounds wouldn't fall out the way I expected them to.

I'll give these techniques another try. will probably still prefer to be able to just push the chambered cartridge down into the mag, then remove the mag and stick it into a pouch. For some reason, that setup is kind of rare on bolt action rifles. I'd probably own a Sako 85 now if I wasn't so annoyed with their Extractor setup.
