thinking about a 5r barrel in 1-8 twist to turn My XR100 223 into a long range 6mm gun. Would like a 6mm chamber with above twist. can the bolt face be opened up ceany without detiment to accuracy or am I getting in way over my head?

You would probably be money ahead to buy a entry level rem700 and start from there rather than invest mega $$ in machining and deprecation on your XR100

or even cheaper still hit your gunsmith where it hurts most and build a savage yourself

That was your 223rd post... it is a sign! :neener:

Just kidding, but I am pretty sure you'll need a new bolt.

This is why I am going to get an XR in .22-250 so I can convert it to .243 easily.

Rather than using your XR100 or buying a Rem 700 donor gun, for a tad more money you could go full custom... like a Stiller. The Stiller's, like the Predator have a Rem 700 footprint, but they're already accurized when you get them. :)

a tad more money

Man, your tad is much bigger than mine if you can get a Stiller built for a tad more than a Remmy 700.:)

Anyway, I think the bolt face could stand the opening required, not absolutely sure though. But it will be expensive. Barrel, installation, bolt machining, all adds up. All in all I probably would just sell the XR and build a Remmy 700 or a Savage.

I'm also not sure there are any bullets for a 6mm that require a 8" twist. I shoot 100's and 105's in my standard .243 Savage 12 FV (9.25" twist) with no problems at all. Even the Berger VLD's stabilize in a 9.25" twist.

But I think you are on the right path, I really like the 6mm bullets for long range shooting. My Savage holds 1/2 MOA out to 600 with no problems, well, that's when I can hold it steady, and read the mirage right, and if the earth wobble doesn't bother me too much.
