How is Montana?

How about a northern Wisconsin guy moving on in? I've been looking for jobs there ever since I rode through on my motorcycle last year. -30F temps are nothing, we get that average January through February (lows of -50F+ are not uncommon).

I'm just very tired of the ultra-liberal Madison dictating what the rest of the state can and can't do.

There are some, small, flies in the ointment. First, although Montana is a shall-issue state, it is done by the county sheriff. Therefore, since the license is not state issued, many other states do not have reciprococity with Montana. Secondly, though there are few bad guys, they do exist and their marksmanship tends to be of a higher order than those who hold their gorks sideways.

Yes the county sheriff issues Concealed Weapon Permits, but right across the top is "State of Montana Concealed Weapon Permit" which is valid throughout the state and reciprocal with many states that have reciprocity laws. Montana also recognizes all other state CWP's that require a background check. The resident crooks may be better shots than typical for those from CA, but we're getting a lot of them up here now too.

The only other state I've ever held a CWP in, Washington, tried to pass reciprocity a few years back but the genius governor Gary Locke said,"we don't want nonresidents carrying concealed weapons because their state requirements might not be as stringent as Washington's". Uh, sure, be 21, pass background check, have money to pay the sheriff. Them's strict requirements. What an ignorant, anti-gun twit. :cuss::cuss: So the holder of a WA State CWP can carry in Montana, but I can't carry there. OTOH why would I want to go back there anyway.

I've found that native Montanans are pretty friendly except to Californians, Ted Turner, and others who think that they're better, smarter, and generally superior to us po' ignurunt idjits who live here full time. It's pretty easy to tell the non-residents fakin' it too. They've got fancy boots, fancy hats, pressed denims, and fancy shirts just like they think cowboys wear. All hat and no cattle....:eek:

You forgot clean trucks with no body damage.

Larry E;

It doesn't matter what it says on the top of the permit, there are states that do not recognize Montana's permit for the reason of county sheriff issuance. Other's don't have the problem, but nonetheless, some do. It's a point worth noting.

I'm slacking because I only have 20, but I am definitely working on it.
Thanks for the laugh.

Got you covered. I have 70 or 80. Not sure of the exact number.

The figures of 90-95% and 27 guns average come from the Montana Shooting Sports Association. Gary Marbut, author of Gun Laws of Montana, compiled the statistics.

I am guessing that most folks own 5-10 guns. That's very easy when you are talking about a 22 rifle, 22 handgun, deer rifle, centerfire handgun and shotgun that most gun owners around here consider the minimum battery.

Then you have lots of folks who have 100, 200 etc who bring the average up. I hang out with the dedicated gun bunnies and would say my collection is pretty typical for hard corps shooters here.

WHATS A RUANA?????

Sold this one a couple weeks ago. Do I have to leave the state?

Only if you sell any more before offering them on THR! :neener:Seriously beautiful, isn't she? Is that one of the old ones? Got any more for sale? Very nice pic, thanks for posting!

Ruana's

I own 2 of them myself, the Arkansas toothpick and the large bowie. Anyone from Montana knows what a Ruana is and where you used to get em.... I got mine at Whiteheads in Butte. Must have been 25 yrs ago.

A Ruana is to knives what a Uni-mog is to all terrain vehicles, Big, tough and made to work.

How much are these knives? If they're expensive, I'll stick to my issue K-Bars. Big, tough and made to work, too.

Minus 30 degrees farenheight...
Is it common for people to heat out there in Montana with oil burners?

105 in the short summer...
There must be air conditioners that need fixin out there.

I was just wondering.

Well since I brought up the whole Ruana thing, here is a few pics of mine. Its been a great knife and has gutted several elk. I know its a bit stained and such but Ruana's are not meant to open envelopes, if you know what I mean.

Since the gun laws have been fully covered, I'll share some other insights from a resident of a neighboring state.

Eastern Montana is underrated by most. I mean how can a place with names like Bad Route Road and Whoopup Creek Road be bad?

Of course the "Hey, why don't you go across the border over to Baker and ask the Cowboys why they have their names on their belts" trick never gets old.

Eastern Montana, where you get out of the car on the side of the highway and have to dodge rattlesnakes so you can take a leak.

Anyone else miss the "reasonable and prudent" days? Driving on 94 about 120MPH and knowing nobody else really gave a rip? That was fun. Hit the gas until the governor kicks in. You used to be able to get drunk as a skunk in a car as long as you weren't driving. Why did they change that anyway?

Federal Highway Fund Dollars
Just a guess, could be wrong.

Outside of no new MGs, did Montana recently ease up
some of those unconstitutional federal BATFE laws?

I moved here last June. Love it.

Have a job managing a startup in Missoula. Making as much money as I was before I left San Fransicko.

I think I am up to the state average for guns. I have bought 6 since I got here. Plus 20 stripped lowers (for an investment).

Next? A FN-FNC full-auto. Thinking about getting a Thompson too.
