I've had the June 6th, 1896 edition of Harper's Round Table in my hot little hands for some time. Watching people here discuss what the proper source of wood is for BP charcoal, and what steps are needed to make the stuff at home, I simply could not sit still knowing what folks used to fill my powder can:

Interesting read. It lets one know that melodrama was the order of the day in those times. Did anybody else notice the bit about the dangers of the roller mill? And then we go to the press mill where "all the moisture is pressed out." How many people think that "moist" powder will go off? I think gun reporters then are like gun reporters now. They really don't know much about what they are writing about but they sure do play up the danger of the situation.

In advertising there are two things that sellproducts. Sex and death. It's hard to link black powder to sex but fairly easy to link it to death. So that's what sells the story.
