Okay, for anyone who has had experience with shooting 147 Subsonic [not suppressed], is there much difference in volume between standard pressure 115gr/124gr and 147gr Subsonic rounds?

Thanks for your comments.

Shooting indoors it's easy to hear the difference. Still need ear plugs with no suppressor tho

Last Friday, I shot 50rds each of Speer Gold Dot 115gr and Federal HST 147gr. I normally carry the Federal HST 147gr in a G19, but I wanted to see how my new-to-me G43X would cotton to either.

From a Gen5 G19, I can't tell the difference between the two in terms of noise. From a G43X, on the other hand, the 115gr is noticeably louder (even as it rotates the gun less in my hand).

To me 147 has the least amount of muzzle blast, followed by 124 then 115. This is why I choose 147 grain for my HD 9mm AR pistol. Since I'm not into suppressors yet it's the option with the least muzzle blast. With an 8" barrel it gains a little velocity but is still subsonic. I prefer the recoil signature of 124 and 147, it's more of a push than a snap. I usually shoot 115 though because it's so cheap.

I still use 124 grain jhp for my carry gun because of the short barrel.

The snappiest most blasty load I ever used was +P+ 115. 147 standard pressure would be at the lowest end of the blast scale.

To achieve similar total momentums, 115's have to be driven faster than 124's, which have to be driven faster than 135's, which have to be driven faster than 147's. Separate and apart from the sonic crack issue, each step down in weight and up in velocity comes with a greater volume of gas. That gas is what makes most of the noise.

But, as others have noted, they're all more than loud enough to immediately and permanently damage your hearing.

I can't tell the difference in noise but rarely use 115's. I prefer the feel of the heavier bullets recoil, muzzle blast could be part of that.

Even if there is a small measurable difference ALL of them are more than loud enough to permanently damage your eardrums regardless of how "loud" it might seem to you. The human ear is a terrible instrument to gauge loud sound with. Just ask Pete Townshend. Protect your hearing. Once it's gone it won't ever come back.
