Ok my son has an assignment for a "CSI" class to do research on a "crime gun."

Having found a 2000 study that listed the Bryco Model 38 as in the top ten recovered crime scene guns in Philly during the 1990's ( and top five for some demographics) and there not being a lot of more recent studies by type available to him on short notice (he did some googling) he went with that handgun. He figured most of his classmates were going to go with the guns they see on fictional crime shows. I really am curious as to how many FN P90s get used in crimes because we see them frequently on the idiot tube adventures.

Anyhow, one of the questions that the teacher had was "how easy are they to get?"

I explained that we live in a no registration state that allows private, no background sales by individuals and so they would be no harder to get than anything else.....and that they could be stolen as well as legally transferred.

Being a smart kid he asked me how common they were and how many had been built.

After a bit and mostly reading about the suit that bankrupted Bryco many times I gave up and told him "Hordes" had been built.

Anyone have an actual number?

I am curious to see how his teacher takes his report which includes a picture of him holding a Bryco 38 and multiple photos of the one in my collection. showing its features.

Here is a start:

Page 25 of the pdf, or page 21 of the report:

Two issues. They produced a 9mm Model 58 as well as the 59, which isn't differentiated in the report. You could group them, or figure out when production changed.

Also, production (probably?) continued until bankruptcy in 2003, so the report only gets you halfway there.

The VPC might have more figures, but I'm tired of googling. You could poke around over there or contact them.

You could also ask the ATF, or even submit a FOI request. Bryco's successor, Jimenez, is still in business. They might know something.

Also, you could try these guys:

The VPC is probably as anti gun as it gets. They also advocated banning all semi automatics and handguns at one point in time.

Well for the purposes of my original point it is moot.

The Boy was in class Friday and the teacher asked how the projects were coming along and he said he was essentially finished, so she had him give his presentation a week early.

The teacher and other high school students were impressed.

I think his use of the Marshal- Sanow numbers in addition to standard bullet weight/velocity/energy info, gel penetration, and the old Smith board penetration tests results to answer the question of how powerful the gun and its ammo were will set the bar a bit high for the other kids.

He also showed a series of photos to demonstrate the gun and it features. I have posted one he used to explain the magazine fed nature of the Bryco.

So at least the Bryco was good for a weekly project grade of "A" for The Boy if nothing else.
