Sorry if this has been posted before, but I just wanted to know, how many have actually emptied their chambers/magazines in a shootout? (War zone scenarios excluded. I'm talking regular civilians.)

Many of you say you carry a 15-19 rounds in the gun, along with a mag or two. Others carry 5 .38sp rounds in the revolver with no reloads. What is realistic? Feel free to state your geographical location, how many rounds were used, or if you even ever had to use your gun. Did you wish for more rounds?

EDIT: Apologies, the third poll option should read, "No, drew my weapon, but no shots fired."

Due to the nature of the incidents, few will talk about it. Most will empty their bowels or bladder before their gun.

Uh yeah....

....Nobody who has (honestly) been involved in anything of this sort is going want to post about it on the web. If someone has had to defend themselves or others by using deadly force, they most likely went through legal hell because of it. Not to mention the fact that most people wouldn't really like to talk about the fact that they had to shoot a man. I doubt you will get much info on this topic here.

Dont think it is the worst thread, is an option for NEVER HAD TO DRAW. Could be really good information for dertermining how many rounds to carry.

The question is phrased poorly. I can see in the OP the glimmer of a topic:
Many of you say you carry a 15-19 rounds in the gun, along with a mag or two. Others carry 5 .38sp rounds in the revolver with no reloads. What is realistic?
But then it's obscured with the poll, which seems predestined to a conclusion and designed to poke at folk.

Most folk carry extra magazines in case they get a feed jam with their primary; often the fastest way to clear a jam is via dropping the mag completely, clearing the chamber, and inserting a fresh mag. It's less about capacity than it is about always having a backup plan in case Mr. Murphy comes along.

Alright, I voted emptied the gun and extra mags because I was thinking of an amusing incident that happened with a couple of overly excited hogs in the trap a few months back.

But when I tried to put it into a humorous story, I lost the train of thought that I had.

Long story short, 9mm is insufficient for feral hogs, even at close range. Thus, 2 full mags were used to stop 3 hogs from eating me.

Sorry guys. English is my second language and sometimes, I cannot write as eloquently as some of you. Mods, feel free to modify as you see fit, or even delete the thread.

Opps.
I answered the poll before I read this part: "War zone scenarios excluded".

So the revised answer is: I've never been in a non war related shootout.

Ayoob is a member here ? wow we can get tons of information from him.

about if ever had to draw- nope i just started carrying in march 2009 cuz i see the growing threat of drug dealers and gangs causing trouble in my area, and the reason i got my CCW (LTCF in PA) cuz i been threatened on numerous occasions by road ragers and some goofs that walk by and say "what the **** you looking at"

times are getting volatile so we need to start arming ourselves cuz things are gonna get worst. i switched from a 12 round 9mm to a 17 round 9mm handgun cuz i know gangs and drug dealers travel in packs these days.

ok, i do not get the "bad , in poor taste " idea on this thread. Why is it that people who have been involved in an incident are "supposed" to act this way. If you were in an incident and you survived it , i think you should be proud of yourself for that. I dont believe anyone here wants to shoot anyone , but if they had to, why is it bad karma to talk about it? Makes me think of the seinfeld episode where george's dad talks about wartime experiences.

The only two shootouts I had with a handgun were in combat -- so excluded by your rules. In each case, I fired a single shot (from my Colt M357). There was no second shot because each time the target was down and out of action after the first shot.

In civilian life, I have used a firearm twice (a .30-30 once and an M1911 once) indefensive situations. No shots fired.

I have used a gun to defend myself three times. Once to defend another person. No shots fired. The guns in question were a Ruger Standard Automatic, a Colt .32 autoloader, and a Russian commercial Makarov.

It's really really hard to believe that more people have emptied their guns in a shootout than have fired a firearm without emptying their weapons... sure, a couple over zealous combat entries, but still.... *cough*

This poll, being poorly worded, and about a very touchy subject (to those that have been involved in such an incident) is just about useless... you are far less to get one type of response at all than the other....

You pretty much have to figure that out for yourself. Looking at someone else's self-defense experience is much too dependent on the variables present in their situation... not yours.

A soldier patrolling Falluja in 2005 might carry a bit more ammo than a grandma on the golf course in Florida.

I don't know about a combat shootout! :uhoh: But I once knew a gent who went deer hunting and upon seeing his first deer; he racked out every round on the ground, all unfired.:D
And NO it wasn't me!

Do...a...search...please!

This question (or some form thereof) is asked regularly, and the results are predictable.

War zone scenarios excluded

i'll have to change to 'no' as it happened in Connecticut's capitol city on Martin Luther King Drive which boarders a park that three gangs were fighting for control of. it is considered a war zone. that was 12 years ago and they are still fighting though the street name was changed.
