carry a handgun while hunting or just in the woods and if so what caliber and style or type of gun.

If I'm just out dinking in the woods, I carry a S&W J frame .38. ( no bears or gorillas to worry about where I am, just snakes and crap.)

If I'm out for a walk in the woods near my house, I'll go with either my P220 with a few spare magazines or a Beretta 92FS with a couple spares. Pending the time of year we have stray dog packs that wander the area and some idiot people as well.

Man, i forgot to put mine a beretta 96fs inox (.40 s&w)

In this day and age I wouldn't consider tramping through the woods without a handgun. I am much more concerned with two legged predators than four legged. Unfortunately due to a very busy life trying to make a living I rarely get to go hiking anymore but when I did I carried a Glock 23 loaded with 165 grain 40 S&W Golden Sabers and a spare mag giving me a total of 26 rounds. I have since sold the Glock and am planning a long weekend getaway to Colorado this summer with a buddy and am in the process of deciding which gun I should take with me.

Ruger superblack hawk 4.5 length Corbon 305gr solids
They made them just for bears.....Ruger or the Corbons..........Maybe:rolleyes:

6" Ruger GP-100 .357 loaded with 158 grain SWC handloads, usually in Uncle Mike's shoulder holster or Bianchi Accumold hip holster.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

When I go camping and offroading I usually have my HK USP9C at my hip because it's the most reliable. Not the greatest caliber for grumpy bears or mountain lion, but I can shoot it well, am familiar with it, and it won't take a dump when i need it.
It the tent I keep an 870 with 00 buck and slugs at the back.

When I am at my camp...

which is in 9 wooded acres, I carry my 3AT in my pocket and my AK slung. I have carved out several hiking trails in the more scenic areas but you never know if a pig or snake will meet me. I have to admit I have not seen any for the last year. I don't worry too much about 2 legged critters as I am known by the neighbors as that "gun nut in the woods"..........East Texas has a gossip mill second to none.....chris3

If I'm out riding dirt bike with the boys- SP101 .357mag tucked under my arm.

If I'm out hunting it's one of these.

Dan Wesson 15-2 .357mag with either 6" or 8" barrel. 158 or 180gn SP's
SS Ruger Redhawk .44mag with 5 1/2" barrel. 250gn FPJ & 300gn SP's
Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley .44mag with 7 1/2" barrel. 250gn FPJ & 300gn SP's

All are hot hand loads. Having taken a bear at close range, these are my minimums. The SP101 is more for when I find undesirable's back at the truck after a day's ride.

I carry one of my 1911's. Even when I bowhunt which may be an issue with game and fish (?) but Im sure they have a good way to tell if something is gunshot or killed with an arrow. Ive had too many encounters with mountain lions, bears to be standing there with just an arrow!

It depends. I often hunt with my Colt Officers Model Target, which is one of the best small game revolvers ever made.

Other than that, I will sometimes carry a Colt SAA in .357 (loaded with .38 Specials, including some shot cartridges) or a Ruger Blackhawk or Colt New Service in .45 Colt. On horseback, I often carry a Winchester Model 94 in .30-30.

Kimber .45 full-size w/spare mag. Ruger Blackhawk .41mag w/250gr Castcore or 210gr Gold Dot if in likely bear country (just black ones here in AR). More likely to come across a meth lab than a bear or mtn. lion around here, tho. Want a titanium Taurus 4" Tracker .357 for wading/canoeing/general woods traipsing about. Load 1st 2 w/CCI shotshells for snakes, next 5 with something stouter.....Still want my .41 for Yogi's turf, though.

If I know I'm headed for a hike or while hunting whether be it with bow or long gun the S&W 500 w/ 440 hard casts and 350 gr xpts, will be on my side. If I get caught off guard and want to venture into the deep forest then my XD45 will be there, as it always is. I keep it alternated between 230gr fmj and 230 golden sabers.

I have a state park not too far from me and if I'm out walking around, I usually put my Glock 19 in a fanny pack and away I go.

My doin' chores / bummin' in the woods gun is a 5.5" Taurus Gaucho SA .357. Depending on location and elevation, either snake shot, .38 swc or 158 gr .357 jhp - whichever is loaded the other are in the pocket.
