How many of you were converted to revolvers?

I have been shooting both for over 45 years. All different types and

brands. I have been carrying autos for some years, just bought a Rossi 2"
.357magnum 8 shooter a few hours ago. I will be carrying it, with 2 extra speedloaders.
Using Remington .38 Spl +P 125 rain JHP's.

WOW! Lot's of great stories. And it's nice to see someone like SpaceExplorer that doesn't mind saying that he got downright emotional over a wheelgun :D

It also seems like the majority of you started and stuck with them even if you added semi autos later on. Only a few seem to have started with semi autos before "seeing the light" and adding revolvers to the family.

It would be interesting to post a mirror image quesition in the semi auto forum asking how many started on revolvers and ditched them in favour of semi autos. I'll bet it would be as strongly in favour of started with semis and stuck with them as you lot are for having started with wheelguns and sticking with them.

EDIT- I started a poll asking about going either way over in General Handguns where I probably should have put this in the first place. For those interested here's a link to the other semi to wheel or wheel to semi poll thread.

As with many, I started with revolvers then joined the auto-loader phase, and came back full-circle to revolvers in the forth quarter. I still kick myself every time this topic comes up. I had a few revolvers, and my local dealer pleaded with me to buy more before the Colts and 'pre-lock' Smiths departed the market. I was a fool not to follow his advice.

I had no interest in revolovers when I first started shooting, now I love them. I only have one, my trusty GP100 stainless 4 inch barrel in .357. My favorite gun to shoot. I wish I lived in a state that allowed open carry so I could carry it more. I only carry it when I am jeeping, hunting or hiking.

I too started with revolvers. It began with a Ruger Security six, which eveolved to a Colg King Cobra and a S&W 686. Then for some reason I drank the auto loader KoolAid, and became convinced my manhood was in question if I didn't carry a 1911. I'm back now, and aside from a few plinkers and milsurps semis, am about to trade my last 1911 for a 686 no dash 4"

You said it for me:

started on semis, felt that there was no other handgun worthwhile to own and shoot but for some reason fell to the wheelgun's charms somewhere along the way

But still no shiny ones!

New Convert

I started out with Colt M1911s when I was younger and loved them you could say I was a 1911 fanatic! But a year or so ago I started to shoot my friends revolvers and I fell in love with them! Last year I Sold all my 1911 and bought my first ever revolvers! First my "6 Colt Anaconda .45Colt and then my "6 Taurus Raging Bull .44Magnum! I love these guns! Big Bore only for me. I can't explain it maybe its just my midlife crisis I am 49 yrs old now. Easy to clean, nothing to take down. No magazines and springs to worry about. No FTFs, No FTEs. Just gun and bullets Period. Simple. Easy. And very powerful!!!!

Yeah- I am old enough to remember buying my first 1911 for around $150-a WWII Remington Rand. It came with a box of ammo at that price, too...Should have kept that one.

I started with a 1911 in 1982 or 1983, and thought it was the one best handgun; seeing revolvers as obsolescent, if not obsolete. I was required to use revolvers at work for at least the first year of service, 1984-'85, however, and learned to really appreciate them. I now own a mix, with more revolvers than autos. The greater total of revolvers is largely due to an interest in single action sixguns.

Coal digger should have bought a older DW . Never shot a s&w that could keep up with old DW's and the 29-2's could not handle the same loads that a dw can handle with out chance of damage but darn nice look'n revolvers. A good basic 44's. I guess the new ones can handle higher pressure loads but when cylinder gap can run as high as 10th's i don't want one. A local shooter was told his was fine after haveing it spray'n folks 8 feet away and the gap mic'd at 9 th's. S&W said that was with in normal allowance's. There performance shop guns are tighter . Production use to be better. Most dw shooters new of the problems during the early years of cz . Equipment was shot, and they had a rework most equipment but some got away and some owners did not know the difference. Only the very high priced freedom arms revolvers can shoot with the DW revolver in the long distance match's even today.

MANY years ago when i turned 21, the first thing i did was to go buy myself a Ruger 22 semi auto handgun! What a jam-o-matic-terd that thing was! SO, it didn't last long, and i then bought a S&W M-19 357 mag., and shot MANY 500 packs of 38spl's through it! Here it is 39 years later, and i still have it!

I've had a car load of semi's and revolvers since, but i was smart enough to choose a revolver for all of my serious work! lol AND all the semi's i have today are 22lr's...

Agreed. The jam-o-matics of yester-year are no contest compared to revolvers.

Arguably, what we have today is the availability of highly reliable auto-loaders versus lower-cost-to-produce revolvers.

Further, given the trends:
1. As businesses have increased security, bad guys are increasinlgy finding residences to be easier targets.
2. Break-ins with multiple intruders, rather than a single intruder, are on the rise.

...the question of handgun capacity will favor autoloaders.

Time will tell.

hardluk1,

Well given that my financial and career situation has changed for the better since 2002-2003 (college student/US Marine), employee of the BNSF Railway since 2007....

I can now afford a Freedom Arms and that is probably what I will buy when I do get another revolver. Most likely a .454 with a spare cylinder in .45ACP since I have a lot of brass and ammo around at any given time in .45ACP. I might get a cylinder in .45Colt but I figure I can come up with some milder loads in .454 brass if I want to.

revolver

I started out with a Beretta 92 in the Marines. Got out bought a XD when they first came out and sat on it for years. My first purchase after the XD was a 686. I tend to buy more autoloaders by number but my affection is leveled at the revolvers.

I don't really have a preference between the two though. I tend to shop for used guns. So I'm looking for something interesting or just a great deal. I am on a passive hunt for a full snake collection.

I'm also looking to purchase a Dan Wesson revolver since they are starting production again.

coal dragger Good job with the railway for sure. I other reason I prefer a DA revolver is for hunting. If sh*t hits the fan i don't have to worry about cocking it but as good as the sa triggers can be I have shot 1 deer and several hogs when they just appeared out of no where under my stand and did not want to pull the hammer back for fear they would hear the click. Ya got to know how it can be when you fall a sleep while hunting?? With that DA its just point and pull just point.

If you get a chance to shoot a early monson mass. made dw give it another try Or the last few CZ years. I got to shoot a guys 414 super mag with a 12" barrel at steel. Amassing revolver. 150yards with open site and i hit the steel with all shoots. I would never buy one or a freedom arm just not pratical. When you can buy a 1600 dollar custom shop handgun by another company and it also is junk anyone can do it. To many people, maybe new to shooting don't know what to do it seems when they buy a problem firearm it would seem and complain first instead of just dealing with CS at the manufactor. I have over the years had a 2 ruger brand new, one taurus-worn out 22 revolver and one KT new that had to go back for some work . All came back spot on and have proven to be great firearms. Atleast give them all a chance to fix the screwup.

lucky-gunner I am a die hard DW fan but what CZ is looking to get even from a discount dealer is just crazy at close to 1200 dollars with only 500 made the first year. They think because people spend to much money on another 1911 copy that they attached the DW name to they can over charge for the revolver too instead of selling for CZ pistol prices. I wanted one baddly but will not buy one at s&w price's when it should be at ruger prices. Thank gosh for used DW's. Seen two real nice 15-2's this last weekend at our area gunshow for 450.

Well shortly after I bought my Dan Wesson they went out of business or production, leaving me up crap creek for any kind of warranty service. That was really fun. The trigger guard would not line up with the rest of the frame, and the nut that secured the grips to the grip shank got stuck and I couldn't get the grips off. Couldn't get it fixed either. So I traded it off.

I converted about the same time as my start date on this forum:D. I had 20 years of semiautos under my belt when I fell in love with a Vaquero .45 Colt at the local gun store. Got on here an to find out a little about it and Old Fuff edged me onto a very expensive and rewarding new branch of the hobby.

When I think about buying a new handgun, nine out of tens times, it's a revolver. I like autos, but I like revolvers more.

So you're saying that The High Road was the reason for your financial ruination but it's OK because you have lots of revolvers to comfort you?

You're sick you know.... but I don't think anyone here has the desire or wherewithall to cure you.... :D

It happened one saturday morning. I was sitting on the couch watching TV when my doorbell rang. I answered the door and met a Ruger Gp-100 in a suit and tie. He told me of the great "Revolver", and how Revolver loved me. It was then that I was converted. :D I've sence given much of my money to Revolver.:D
