How much ammo do you carry?

How many reloads, if any, do you carry per concealed carry gun?

1 reload per gun not so much that I think I'll reload during a firefight but to recharge the gun for the trip home.I plan to survive. also I do frequent the country where other nastys live.

Are you out there, Mas? I just want to make sure you see this in the event that I need an expert witness. :what:

BTW, in the rare instances when I'm only carrying one revolver, I carry three or more reloads, but I also usually have a KelTec P32 holding 8 rounds with an extra 7 round magazine. There have been times, usually if a relative needs to visit an "ungood" neighborhood, when I have carried three revolvers (1 - S&W 681, 1 - S&W 13, 1 - Taurus 85ULSS, with two reloads each and my KelTec P32 with one reload, 66 rounds total. I stay away from water when loaded down like this.

one mag for the 9mm or a speedloader for the 357,

generic cell phone cases from lowes make great belt clip carriers for mags or speed loaders-the come in two sizes starting around $5.00

When carrying my SP101 off duty, I carry two speedloaders and two speed strips loaded with issued ammo (Win .38+P 125gr Silvertips) and two speed strips loaded with Win 110gr .357. I guess I'm one of the oddballs that likes to have enough ammo to take over a small Third World country!

I carry 357 and it is not my usual weapon since I carry pistol more often. But when I do carry my revolver I keep a box of cartidges in the dash board.

A speed strip in a belt carrier. 5 or 6 rounds depending on whcih revolver I have along.

I carry a ruger sp-101 concealed. if i'm in the city it's loaded with speer gold dot "short barrel" ammo, but out on the hiking trail it's loaded with federal cast core ammo which can also be used to penetrate a car door or window if needed. I carry the one extra reload in an old leather policemans dump pouch on my belt strong side. both loads are approx. 1000fps for easy follow up.

SgtDusk.
revolver is my '5' reloads. as a back up to my p239(40).may sound odd, but works for me. besides, have 2 hands , why not a gun for each? strongside at 4 oclock iwb sig. left side, vest/winter coat pocket, 642 in a custom holster to keep it seperate from car keys.

As Jeff Cooper used to say, "There's such a thing as enough ammunition. And ther's such a thing as not enough ammunition. There's no such thing as too much ammunition."

I carry one or two speed strips(6 rounds each) when I carry my 5 shot S&W 642 or Ruger SP101. Right now, I'm carrying an SP101 in my holster and I have one speedstrip in my pocket.

I don't like speed loaders because they are so fat, preferring the flat speedstrips even though a reload is slower.

I'm asking due to reading Mas Ayoob's column about prosecutors using the fact that someone carried extra ammo to accuse him of "wanting to kill someone."
I suppose that a prosecutor could say the same thing about merely having a CCW on you.

Do what you think is best for you. No matter what you do, someone will surely have a problem with it. You can't let that dictate how you run your life.

I only carry what's in the gun, no reloads. I carry a Taurus Mil-Pro 40 that is 10+1. If (11) rounds of 40 doesn't get the job done, then I'm throwing in the towel.:p

S&W 642 with 2 speedloaders (usually). Sometimes I just carry a single reload.

I'm not yet carrying my 1911, but will carry it with one extra 7 rounder when I do.

So 15 shots total for either. Far more than enough for anything I'm ever likely to encounter in my quiet neck of the woods.

In winter, spring and fall, I carry a S&W Model 29-3 6 inch with four speed loaders full of Speer Short barrel 200 grain JHP Magnum ammo. Very accurate and controlable. The BUG is a Springfeild TRP (no rail) with at lest two spare Wilson Combat 8 round mags loaded with Hornady TAP 230 grain JHP. Last ditch back-up is a Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Covert folding knife.

Summertime gun is the same .45 TRP with two spares or on very hot days I'll go to a Springfield .45 Micro Compact 3 inch with two 7 shot wilson combat mags. Clothing permitting, I'll carry a S&W Model 60 in an ankle rig with two speed loaders as a bug to the little .45. The load for this gun is the old FBI 158 grain Plus P lead hollow point. The Gerber goes along too, of course.

Someone once asked me since I carried so much hard ware, if I was expecting trouble where ever I was going. My reply was simple. If I was expecting trouble, I wouldn't go.

Finally, I'm 6 feet even and weigh in at 150 out of the shower so if I can conceal these weapons, anyone can. You can hide a lot of useful tools if you work at it and choose holsters and clothing with care. The key is to avoid looking like you work for Blackwater.

As Jeff Cooper used to say, "There's such a thing as enough ammunition. And ther's such a thing as not enough ammunition. There's no such thing as too much ammunition."

It seems that if your pants fall down due to the weight, you have too much ammunition (or in need of better support). If you win the lottery and get caught up in the "one in a million" gunfight that lasts longer than the statistical 2.5 shots (or whatever it is), no amount of ammunition manufactured that year will be enough. If you go out and return without noticing your hardware, maybe you had the right amount.

Me, I'm bass ackwards ... in the wintertime I have a 1911 riding in a IWB with two spare magazines on the opposite hip. I usually wear a sweater and winter coat over it. This, in effect makes my BUG the primary (since it's in the outside coat pocket) ... a S&W 340PD for which I don't carry speedloaders since it would be quicker to go through the required motions to draw the 1911.

My PT145 carries 10 rounds of .45. I have to either resolve the situation, or get the heck out of there before I use ten rounds.

To be honest with you, after reading what everyone else has to say, I feel like carrying an extra mag. You never know.

After all, Murphy is alive and well. :neener:

For those who don't carry reloads, I can only point out that most people under stress fire their gun empty when they start shooting it unless well-trained. Semiauto shooters aren't immune, either. I've seen many people pulling the triggers on 1911's with the slides locked back. You should have seen the surprise on their faces.

Now, firing your gun empty might not be a problem if you take out your target and don't have any others. Maybe my time in the military makes me leery of not having enough ammunition. I know lots of guys who think the standard infantry basic load of seven thirty-round M16 magazines (210 rounds) weren't near enough.

Typical carry is a SP101 in 357mag and/or a 642-1. I carry a speed strip strong side rear pocket with (6) 135gr GDHP's.

If I'm wearing a jacket or coat, a speedloader or two usually goes along in a pocket too.

Most of the time I just carry one reload. And sometimes I don't even have that.

My SP-101 is what I use to fight my way out of a situation. Or if the mood is right, to fight my way to another firearm. Preferably a rifle.

(Honestly I would prefer to carry more, but it's just not handy enough.)

I'd rather do with less and carry something, than not carry at all. The one time I had to use a handgun in a defensive situation it was against three or four guys in a car trying to run me off of the road.
At the time all I had was a single shot BP derringer I had thrown in the back seat after a trip back to my parent's farm. And it wasn't even loaded. Fortunately they weren't interested in sticking around long enough to find that out.

If there is an area where I might face more than 1-2 goblins, you are not going to find me there. If this is an area I MUST be in because of work, family, etc. Usually you will find me armed with more than a handgun, and I generally do not travel alone in such areas.

With either my S&W M60 or SP101, I carry 2 speedloaders on my off side, a Speedstrip in my pocket should I need it, and if it's winter, I carry an additional 2 speedloaders in my jacket. 20 rounds in summer, and 30 in winter if you add it up.
