I want a remington .308 700 with a 24'' stainless barrel (1/10 twist) and with a high quality block/steel bedded stock. I have a competent gunsmith. I like the contour of the remington vtr stock but the barrel on that gun is to short and the stock is flimsy. So about how much will it be and what stock and barrel do I need and where do I get them. I was thinking about HS precision or bell and carlson and shilen for a stock and barrel. I want to spend ~$1,500 on the rifle and I already have a scope picked out.

Talk to your smith. If he knows what he is doing with precision rifle builds he will have suggestions, and most likely be able to source the parts for you cheaper than you will be able to.

I like Lilja and Brux barrels. Bell and Carlson stocks are the best value out there for a good precision stock. If money is not an issue, check out Manner's stocks.

It all depends on what you want and how much $$ you want to spend. You need to provide more details before anyone can give you any constructive suggestions.

PS: If an HS Precision stock (or a member of their management) was on fire, I wouldn't piss on it to put it out.

It has been edited for more detail; Hopefully I can get more help now.

Barrel>>> Douglas, Krieger. Get them at the manufacturer.

Stock>>> McMillan, HSP Get them at the manufacture, Stockys Stocks, Brownells, ect...

Custom build...anywhere from $1200 up to the limit of your imagination!

You want a tack driving 308...? Get a Model 12 Savage, or a Model 10, or 16 and modify it to your liking...much less money, the same accuracy you'll spend thousands for and you'll have cash to blow on momma a new ring....or not! A better, hi speed, low drag scope!

Custom shop...Savage, Remington.

Unless you just want your very own, personal, custom built, it's all me, rifle, a custom shop rifle from a manufacturer with some personal customization is very cost effective.

Something to ponder. Nothing wrong with the total custom build though....makes us money!

Look into the R-5 Milspec model 700. Its pretty much what you are looking for and uses the M24 barrel. Really cool rifle. I have seen them from 1k to 1100.

If you are willing to spend that much on a rifle why don't you get a quality custom action. Stillers actions run around $900 and add another $1,000 for the trigger, stock and barrel, you end up with a superbly better rifle and you don't spend much more than you would have on a Remington. After all, you are going all custom on the parts anyway.

Let's see.....
Stiller action>>> $900
Barrel>>>>>>>> $400
Stock>>>>>>>> $500
Trigger>>>>>>> $200
Gunsmith>>>>> $1000
Total><><><>< $3000

Getting your butt handed to you at the range by the guy with the Factory Savage.

For your budget, you can get a nice Manner's stock. Go to their website and pick out your favorite.

Buy yourself a used Remington 700 BDL action off gunbroker, or at your local gunstore/gunshow. If you can't find the action by itself, look for a used hunting rifle. You can find good deals if you get a beat up hunting rifle that has been carried on many hunting trips and abused, but not fired much. You should be able to get one for $300-400.

Take your action and stock to your gunsmith. Talk with him about barrels. All of the high quality custom manufacturers mentioned earlier make excellent barrels. Arguments could rage for years over who is better. All make barrels capable of shooting far better than any shooter in field conditions.

$400 for a barrel, another $500-600 for smith work: Blueprint action, custom ground recoil lug, cut chamber, install and headspace barrel, true everything up, bed and float action/barrel into the stock. Then refinish everything. Save some money here and don't go for a crazy custom finish, just get something cheap and weather resistant. If you want it too look good, do it yourself with a can of Krylon spray paint. Also have your smith adjust the factory Remington trigger. A properly adjusted Remington trigger can be just as nice as a $200 aftermarket drop-in trigger.

If your smith knows what he is doing, which is the most critical aspect of the build, you should have yourself a .5 MOA or better rifle, that will most likely shoot much better than you.

Next step, GO SHOOT. By the time you can shoot nearly as well as the rifle, it will be time for a new barrel. By this time you will know exactly what you want and can rebuild the rifle from there.

If it costs a gunsmith a grand to do simple work on a Remington based action, he better send a birthday card because he owns your ass.

If that Rem. action is blueprinted, trued up, refinished, bedded, and the bbl finished chambered/headspaced I wouldn't doubt the figure, heck UM deals with it everyday so I am sure that is close to their going rate for the work required.

:)

R5 Milspec of mine shoots 1/3 MOA to 200 yards with Federal 168 Match ammo. Has a Nightforce scope,Badger bottom metal and mounts and a good trigger. I guess I got lucky but for what I want I am not going the gunsmith route again.

everything he is wanting done is far from simple!
If that is the case then $1,500 budget will not cut it. Might as well get exactly what is wanted first time out. It just seems that if you go through all the trouble of building a cherry 700, or other rifle, that costs nearly as much as a custom build, might as well do it right the first time.

Considering the price of this. Seems building on a factory Rem action a bit spendy.

Your preaching to the choir brother! This very statement is told customers on a daily basis.

Someone ends up with a 700 they really don't need, so, hey, I've got an idea, I'll have a custom built, and I want it 'skunk works' too, buddy!

As we used to say...these are welding rods, not magic wands...and you can't turn chicken s_it into chicken salad!

Not that the 700 action is a turd....it is not, but it takes a lot of time and money to get one up to speed the likes of a Stiller or such.

So, if you want to fly that fast, why not buy the hi speed stuff from the gitgo. It'll be a lot less expensive and better quality, and you'll be happier!

I built a CZ Bruno factory M98 action with a Douglas barrel, Timney trigger, Bishop stock that was shooting a 3 lobed single hole from a 3 shot group at 100M when it was stolen. That rifle would have shot better if I had finished dialing in the load. but the parts were all used, I did the work and had less than $300 invested in it and that included the Scope I had mounted.
