How much better is the H&K p30, than the Walther PPQ

I have the same situation like (member nwilliams post#45). I own an Walther PPQ M1 (It's a keeper!) However, I have always liked the P30 but I have my reserves as far as their trigger...
I was thinking I wanted a P30 with the LEM trigger, but now my dilemma... so it seems to have another HK solution. ;)

AH. OK. Probably better to start a new thread though so as to not confuse forum members and get better participation.

Problem is VP9 won't be out for a couple months yet. The VP9 is only in the hands of the select few that HK wants to have it right now.

I am sure once it is widely available forum members will be eager to discuss and share their experiences.

I own more than a few SIGs so I am a DA/SA guy and I really like my DA/SA P30LS and shoot it well but other opinions vary.

Good luck!

P30 is worse than a PPQ.

I have been struggling to find a better carry pistol than the HK P7 PSP. I love how it is safe when you put it down, but ready to fire when you draw it. I love that I can shoot it better than most other pistols due to the trigger and sights. The only centerfire pistol that I can shoot better than a P7 is the Sig P210. The P210 has some hammer bite and a long reach to the safety though - not to mention it is heavyish and only 8 shots.

I love my G19, but could never shoot it as well as the P7 and certainly not as well as the P210.

I just did something that I should have done years ago - took 10 pistols that I may want to carry, and shot them all unrested at 50 feet - 10 groups of 10 shots each, and then scanned the targets and calculated the average mean radius, and sorted that into Excel. I compared the PPQ 9mm M2, P210, Glock 19, P8 PSP, Glock 22, P30-V1 9mm, Shield 9mm, Glock 42, LCP, and Para Executive Carry 45. I don't like anything DA (what is now often called DA/SA) because from a user-interface perspective, you want the same shot on each pull. In my opinion, DA/SA pistols are obsolete (even though I am fond of the P228).

The primary candidates to replace my P7 for a main carry pistol are the G19, P30, and PPQ.

The results are not fully in, but so far, I am shooting the PPQ even better than the P210 and P7! Shocking! A decent capacity combat-style 9mm that seems to be no compromise. I never thought I would find the perfect pistol, but the PPQ M2 seems to be it.

So why is the PPQ better than the P30-V1? The P30 has the following problems:

1. The trigger pull is too long - not as bad as a Kahr, but not optimal.
2. The reset is too long.
3. The mag release inside the trigger guard feels odd when I pull the trigger and brush up against it. I don't like it protruding into the guard as it does with mine.

So even for the same price, the PPQ is better than the P30-V1 (and the V1 is the best P30). But the P30 is about $350 more.

My current opinion is that the G19 is best factoring in price, but the PPQ is the best carry pistol cost no object, and not overpriced at all.

I own both and the P30 is the better pistol. Only you and your budget can tell if it is worth the price difference. I don't trust plastic sights or guide rods, but that is me and you might feel differently.

- Steel sights on P30 / Plastic sights on the PPQ
- Steel guide rod on P30 / Plastic guide rod on the PPQ
- P30 has a number of trigger options to suit your needs or taste
- PPQ comes with a light, short reset trigger and that is your only option
- Polymer on the P30 is tougher than the PPQ / The PPQ polymer is softer and mars more easily
- P30 is hammer fired / PPQ is striker fired
- P30 shoots softer with a tad less muzzle flip than the PPQ
- P30 has adjustable side plates the PPQ does not
- P30 magazine release is wide and easily manipulated PPQ magazine release is thin and easy to miss under stress (M1 PPQ)
- P30 will hold its value better and longer than the PPQ

I trust them both but trust the HK more and if I had to pick just one I would pick the P30 over the PPQ. Others might choose differently. That is just my preference and I prefer HK guns in general for a number of reasons.

Thanks for the excellent pictures, but if you don't mind me asking..... why are the cartridges inserted backwards in the magazines?

It's a HK thing from long ago when a ad was printed this way by mistake.

I have two P30 V1s, both with the light LEM trigger. My wife needs all the small grip panels and I prefer a mix of medium and large panels. She used to have a Para PDA with their LDA trigger, which functions like the LEM but without the. 2nd strike capability the HK has. We also both had Glock 17s, which also finished cocking during the trigger take up. The LEM feels very natural to me.
The other day, I was handling a PPQ at my LGS to check out the trigger. While the break was better than the Glock's, the take up had a grittiness to it that is completely absent from my two P30s. I like the positive reset the LEM trigger has, it's the easiest to ascertain of any other pistol I've owned, and there have been lots of them. I like that now that I have my two P30s, an HK45 and my Glock 26, I no longer have any interest whatsoever in buying any more semi-auto handguns. Now revolvers.....

I like DA/SA pistols with the decocker-only feature alot more than striker fired pistols. So for me the HK is a ton better than the PPQ. For the very same reason I also think it isn't that better than a P99 AS :D.
