I am a hobby hobo...mountain biking, woodworking, scuba diving, computer racing, hiking/backpacking, golf, etc...etc...

Anyway, all of these hobbies are expensive and I have just started getting back into shooting (haven't since I was a kid until a few months ago). Man, I could spend a TON of cash on this hobby if I had the funds. Since April I have bought two handguns (a colt python and a CZ 75B stainless) and that is all of the guns I have currently. I still need/want a 10mm pistol (Glock 20 or EAA Witness Elite), a 1911(Colt or Kimber), a 44 mag revolver (SW 29), .22 CZ kadet, .22 Colt Diamondaback, a .357 levergun (Win 94 or 92), a nice bolt action rifle (not sure yet), .22 rifle (Ruger 10/22 or CZ Varmit), an AR-15 (Haven't decided yet), and a Rem 870 Marine and that is just to start. Going to the range 1-2x/week and firing off 200-300 rounds + range fees starts to add up.

How much have you spent so far this year?

flat range fee $10 x 1.5 times a month average is $180 per year.

this year so far added about $200 in reloading equip, and components... No guns bought yet this year, but an XD-45 coming up in a couple weeks, so add $500 for that.

This year I think I've spent around 1500$ on purchasing actual guns. Expect that to double in the ~3 months left.

I go to the range on average about every 1.5 weeks. With range fees, ammo I use and that which I keep, misc cleaning stuff, extra mags every now and then, 50 bucks a week is probably conservative.

I can think of worse hobbies.. at least I can sell my guns and make back a good portion of my money... if I wanted. I knew a guy many years back who spent 10x more on model trains of all things and all they did was go around this big panorama thing he had in his basement.... what fun is that lol.

trains are kinda fun... but not as much as shooting...

I'd still play with trains if I had a setup, but I don't... :)

I have never added it up*.

And I don't want to.

It is better for everyone concered (as in my wife) that the total remains unknown. ;)

*money is from my own "slush fund" and not involved with the home budget.

i was at the gun store the other week and had to change my mailing address in my account information. after the guy changes my address he turns the monitor toward me to show me my account info. he pointed to the number $6900 and says, that's your year to date total spending with us. that was before the $1100 AR i ordered from them yesterday. i also have $3000 spent at another gun shop this year. these numbers don't include my spending at midwayusa, brownells and cabelas.

i am single.

I don't keep track.
If I want it and have the money, I get it. I do not have a wife to nag me about it.
However, shooting is my only participatory sport, I don't expend time and money as a "hobby hobo."

im 22 year old college student. if i make 7k a year it'd be something. i max out my roth IRA first and foremost, put 1 k aside for spending money at college and then spend the rest on guns and reloading compenents.

thankfully my range offers family memberships for about 50 dollars a year. less if you donate your time, and you can attend as often as you like.

So far this year (starting Jan), I have only bought one gun. That, along with optics comes to around $500. Ammunition, I can only make a rough guess, but in the region of $600 or so. And I'm not even going to try counting the gas for shooting trips or the miscellaneous odd and ends associated with proper firearms maintenance.

In other words, not enough.

I am a middle aged feller who is single with a good income. My hobbies are 4x4's, shooting, hunting, etc. It all blends together and is hard to separate. Actual buying of guns has gone down somewhat, because I have most of what I need, which is never as much as I want. I still seem to buy 4-5 guns per year whether I need them or not.

this year so far I've spent about 1100$ (ak, ammo)

worst part is I'm almost out of ammo for the AK =/

I'm not sure. I think I may be on the one gun a week plan. :D

I run thru about 200 rounds of ammo a week. The good news is my gun club dues are only about $60.00 a year.

Ha! I don't even want to calculate how much I've spent that is shooting related.

From this year:

Les Baer Custom Carry
Rock River 20" Stainless A4
HK P2000

Bruce Gray's Practical Shooting class + 1500 rds of .45 ACP

Regular Range sessions + ammo

USPSA Matches on Saturdays with the SIGforum group + .45 ACP

San Gabriel Shoots with the Socal groups on a regular basis + ammo

Random gear that just gets accumulated from B/S/T forums :D

And one BIG shoot coming up next month. + LOTS of ammo

::speechless:: :eek:

I've spent about $1500 on pistols over the last couple of years, Springfield XD 40, Taurus Mil-Pro 40 stainless, Taurus Tracker 357, and a Ruger 22/45. This year I've spent about $300 on ammo, mainly for my 40's. I find myself shooting my 22 more, since ammo prices are on the rise. I can shoot 100 rounds of 22 per week for $2-3.

considering it is my primary hobby I dont really keep track but I would say quite a bit between guns ammo and related stuffs

I've never kept track and it flucuates from year to year but probably averages about $3,000-$4,000 a year.
Since flying is a second hobby I can manage to spend a fair amount on toys.

I found a loophole.

Last year I discovered I could claim shooting as "work related expenses" on my taxes. I'm active duty, but my current command doesn't provide ammo or weapons for training. I found that I'm "required to maintain profficiency in small arms" which leaves a lot of room for interpretation.
I claimed every single round I shot (and could provide a reciept for) on my taxes, and two "familiar weapons for training" as well.
If I add some other miscelaneous stuff, my deduction is somewhere around $12000, which of course is only $2k over the Standard Deduction, but worth it. I guess that means that my Sig 228 and AR-15, bought last year, plus ammo bought last year, is right around $10k. That is with reciepts to back it up. So, not too much, considering it is "work related".

I bought a box of ".22 shells" (as my wife calls them) at Wal Mart back in June.

And no one can prove otherwise, especially her

PinnedAndRecessed: EXACTLY!!!

As for a dollar figure- wells it's easily in the thousands thinking about it.

Enough that I had to sell a couple of collector AR-15's to balance the ledger. I have some nice collector Pythons and a Model 27, but no more collector guns. If I was a millionaire I'd collect, but its hard to have guns you don't fire to preserve the value, they belong in museums not in our collections. That alone will save a fortune.
