I downloaded two barrel weight calculators and neither one wants to work in this Vista software.

It's a 308 barrel with a .57 or .58 diameter at the muzzle, no flutes, CM steel. I don't need an exact weight, a quick and dirty number will do.

Thanks

[QUOTEcompare the weight of the 20" vs 24" savage 10fp divide the difference by 4 and there ya go][/QUOTE]

I always hated story problems when I was in school..........

Depends upon the contour (O.D.) of the barrel, to a lesser degree the alloy composing the barrel as well as caliber since a larger bore removes more mass from the interior of the barrel.

Just get a hacksaw and wack the first inch of your hunting rifle's barrel off and weigh it, then you'll know. ;)

Of course, you could also assume the density of the steel that you are using to be ~7.87 g/cc or and work out the "volumes" of the barrel itself minus the "missing" steel (the bore) in cc's and multiply it by 7.87 . You'd then have to divide that number by 28.35 to get the weight in ounces. Should be pretty darned close. (+/- 5%)

I think a standard 22 in barrel will weight somewhere between 2 and 2 1/2 lbs. At 2 1/2 or 40 oz, and inch off the front would weight less than 2 oz.

that depends

In the palm of your hand, not so much.
At the end of a 40" rod, it'll seem a like a lot.
At the end of a 4 day course at Front Sight, even more.

Figure the volume of the OD, and subtract the volume of the ID. That gives you the cubic inches.

Steel weighs 480 pounds per cubic foot. 1,728 cubic inches in a cubic foot.

Area of a circle is Pi x R-squared. ("No, no, pie are round!") Area times length = volume...

Assuming only a slight taper and a 22"-26" barrel, you're talking about less than an ounce of weight per inch of barrel for the muzzle, more as the diameter increases. :)
