How much does your hunting rifle weigh?

i have a few but the one ive been using most is an H&R 1871 in 308 with a 4x weaver scope. about 2" groups but 6# with about 250$ total in it.

It varies

Every year it weighs more. Seems to be right up with my spare tire now.

My Rem 760 .30-06 is by nature a light rifle, but I fixed that by adding weight to make it 10.5 lbs. Even with 220 grain bullets it now recoils like a .243. All my tree stands are less than 100 yards from my house, so weight is not a problem.

After sighting in my Father's Remington 7400 30-06, then my Mother's Remington 700 .243, and then my fat hog of a LR-308 a few weeks ago, I came to realize something:

I've hunted with EBRs so long that I really can't shoot a light sporter all that well anymore. We were not using all that great of a rest to sight in, and I found that I didn't hold the sporter rifles all that steady, or should I say that it took more effort to stay steady.

Then I dropped my LR-308 on the table and it just sat there like the rock that it is while I squeezed off the trigger with no movement of the crosshairs.

Weight has its trade-offs. For steadier shots, I'll spend a little more time in the gym.

Jason,
I like the short barrel. I reload for it and have real accurate loads using 275g Barnes X bullets (XPB).

Why carry a 10" barrel if I only need the 4"? Besides, some days the 500 can be my CCW.
Hey, if it suits you then more power to ya, friend.

For thirty-some years I put in many a ten- to fifteen-mile walking hunt with 9.5 pounds of '06. Not every day during the season, of course, and a good many short hunts of no more than a few miles, but the weight wasn't all that big a deal.

Not until that last hour before getting back to camp, anyhow. :D

Ssomething about hitting age 70 made justifying a 700 Ti just really easy. :D:D:D

It depends on the hunter. I've tried form 5 1/2 to 12 lbs. My back can't handle carrying over about 6 1/2 lbs anymore and I recently had shoulder surgery so this year I went with a 6 lb AR and liked it. I tried a 6.5 lb '06 mountain rifle but that got to be hard on my shoulder. My 7mm 700 is great for stand hunting. it's a little over 8 lbs. I also sometimes hunt with a 30-30, about 7 lbs, and a .357 pistol. On some states they must have 6 inch barrels.

Well, going up the scale:

6lb-1oz Win. 94 Trapper .44 with Williams peep

8lb Ruger No.1A .30-06 w 3-9X scope

9lb- 12oz Rem 700 Varmint .308 w/ 6-24X scope

I really haven't planned to take the varmint rifle into the woods but it is not as heavy as I would have guessed.

my 308 Browning A-Bolt Micro weighs 6 1/4 empty with no optics, so i fugure right around 7 with 3 rounds my scope and sling. It feels very light though because of the cut down dimensions...

Most of mine are around 10 pounds. I gave up on the lightweight rifle idea. I find that heavier rifles hold steadier and kick less and 3 lbs of extra weight isn't all that significant IMO. If weight and fatigue were really important to me I would start by going on a diet as I could stand to lose 20 lbs or more.

I like heeeeeavy rifles. They are more stable, and allow for faster recovery for follow-up shots. My lightest centerfire hunting rifle weighs in at 12 pounds, and the heaviest just over 18 pounds.

the lighter, the better

the lighter, the better, at least until you pull the trigger. but seriously, you drag this thing all over the place. up and down hills, through miles of open prarrie, thich forrest, swamps, over river and streams, all for (hopefully) ONE shot. so, in my mind, and in my hands, the lighter the better. light powerful guns are not fun to shoot (they kick like a freaking mule) but the bullet does not know that. if you are going to shoot it a bunch, you want a heavier rifle, but if its sole purpose is taking game, try to figure out a way to lighten it as much as is practicle. i am even comtemplating hollowing out a spot in my stock to lighten it up some. of course i would probably put in some survival gear in there if i do it, so i am not sure how much weight i would save. but even then, a few small plastic things should weigh less than solid walnut.

Savage 12 FV, .223 REM. 5 rds ammo, Bell and Carlson Duramax stock, Warne one peice scope base and Perma split rings, Burris Fullfield II 4.5X14 scope, Harris 1A2-25C bipod, padded leather sling with swivels = 13.5 lbs.

Thats the heaviest, all the rest feel like tooth picks compared to that rig!

My type 38 is about 5# maybe 6 max.

My 30-06 is atleast 8 to 8.5

my other one weighs in at 12.5# but that is my varmint rifle.

Model 700 Mountain Rifle is something like 6.5 lbs without optics (don't really remember since it was over 20 years ago when I bought it) plus another 14 ounces with scope and rings. In a 30-06 this thing causes pain after a half-dozen shots, but it is very pleasant to carry.
