I am looking at the CZ-75 or perhaps a Glock? By reading a bunch of threads I have found that those 2 guns are the most recommended semi-autos as far as reliability, build quality, and cost. Basically, I want a very reliable 9mm. I was hoping I could find one for around $300-$375. I want to purchase it within the next week. I live in Knoxville and the CZ-75 was quoted to me for $440.

Thanks for the advice!

Hey, I'm a fan of both!

$440 is high for a CZ-75B. They can be had around here for $400 but not too many dealers carry CZ.

I'd figure right about $500 for a brand new Glock model 17 or 19. The 26 seems to run a little higher around here.

For $440 you should be able to get a Sprinfield XD. Another excellent choice.

Oh, the the Taurus P92 (clone of Beretta 92) should run you about $330 IIRC.

That's all off the top of my head though and reflect Grand Rapids Michigan prices.

If it was me I'd get the CZ to start with simply because it's all steel. That is, assuming it fits your hand right.

$440 is new retail. never pay retail.
take your time, find one online if you have to and have it shipped (TN Sales tax -- including the temporary .01 -- usually makes it cheaper to ship) Find a FFL to do a reasonable transfer fee (usually 20-30 bucks plus 10 bucks for brady BS) This adds about 40-50 bucks to the firearm so keep this in mind.
Try the classifieds here or at glock talk and CZforum.
Check out the gun shows in your area.
You should be able to find a CZ in that price range, and probably a glock for a little more.

CZ is a great gun but you can buy a good used 9mm for ~$140 www.jgsales.com for a Star BM.

CZ 75B cost me $360 NIB a few weeks ago. Shop around. The FM HiPower clones for about $300 are good guns, but IMHO CZ is well worth the extra. The Arcus HiPower type gun for about $250 is worth a look too.

PS I agree the Taurus PT92 is another worh looking at as well.

Is there a reason you are not considering a S&W chambered in 9mm? I see police trade in and used civilian S&W's going for $300 to $400. Some of them are in great shape. Seems some police officers are not into guns, so they shoot them to qualify, then the gun spends the rest of its life in the holster.

Nobody is recommending them because you can buy better new guns for that amount.

Nothing really wrong with S&W autoloaders I had a Model 59, one of only two I've ever traded, and still have a Model 669. They shoot reliably but I like every other 9mm I have better. Clearly I'm not alone.

I think S&W autos were popular with bureaucrats who chose guns, not with the officers forced to carry them I don't think many with a choice chose S&W. After the Clinton-HUD sell out S&W expected to dominate police sales but didn't anticipate how how Glock could really go to win a contract. Lots of politically orientated gun owners go so far as to insist S&W should die becasue of this. I'm a bit on the fence about this. The company is under new management now, and we'd all lose if S&W revolvers were gone, OTOH I'd never miss the loss of their autoloaders which, IMHO are mundane at best.

You can get a brand new Steyr M9 for $289 from CDNN Investments. There is no finer plastic 9mm on the planet, it beats the pants off of a Glock.

You also might want to consider Ruger's line of 9mm autoloaders. I've seen them for around $350.

While I have no personal experience with them, I've read pretty good reviews on Arcus, a supposed BHP clone. All the parts don't interchange so in my opinion it's not a true clone. I think AIM has them for around $200.00 even after you add in shipping and your local FFL's fee you should be able to get behind one for well under $300.00.

Just from reading threads on the Steyr club thread at Glocktalk, I'd have to second Cortland's suggestion. Although I don't own one, from what I read, every who does own one, seems to rave about them( after break-in ). The price is certainly right.:)
