I'm considering trading in or selling my Saiga .223 and Marlin 795. Obviously neither are high end rifles, retailing at ~ $300 and $100 new. Mine are in like new condition, with maybe 150 rounds through each.

How much could I expect a fair gun shop to give me in trade in value or cash?

I was figuring probably $300 - 325 trade value. What say you?

I'm planning on taking them in tomorrow, for trade in value. There's nothing wrong with either. I just don't need em, and won't miss em due to other guns in my collection, and I'd rather have something new to toy with.

Thanks!

Where are you located? If its in CT I'll meet you tomarrow with cash and buy that Marlin.:D

College Station, TX - About 1.5 hours north of Houston. Should of put that in there in the first place, eh?

Gun Shops are going to want to make the most profit they can, so I think you estimate of getting $300 is probably going to be a bit higher than what you really will be offered.

Think of it this way, they will probably sell the Saiga for $250-275 as its used and the Marlin for around $75. Gun shops often will give you 50% or so of of their expected sale prices so I would give a wild ass guess that a more likely offer for selling them will be $150-200 for both. Gun shops will give more for trades, than outright cash, so a trade for something they have could bump that up 25% more.

If you aren't in a huge rush you would be better off just selling them individually here on the classifieds, on another gun forum, or on Gunbroker. You will get a lot more money for your rifles that way.

You do have a few more options other than a gun shop (or a pawn shop, even). You can post them here in the classified section, put them on texasguntrader.com, Gun Broker, Auction Arms or other classifieds, as well as other Texas-based forums.

I'd recommend staying within the state, simply because you can legally to a FTF transaction and don't have to worry about FFL transfer fees, etc.

I've sold stuff FTF through ads here, on texasguntrader and on txchlforum, and haven't had a single problem.

retailing at ~ $300 and $100 new

If that is actually their new retail price, then the dealer can likely get brand new ones from a distributor for ~$250 and ~$75, and he will be working down from there because your guns aren't new. I agree with MachIV . . . somewhere around $225ish.

I do think the Marlins go for a bit more than $100 new, closer to $140, so that may be in your favor. As mentioned, you can probably sell them privately for more.

All input seems fairly close. A good friend bought a Saiga AK 7.62 about 2-3 years ago when the market was insane and probably paid more than $500, This was when everyone thought that incoming Obama administration was going to implement bans/restrictions on many weapons especially semi-auto weapon or ammo. Good thing he makes a lot of money being a dentist.

Have you considered using the for sale section here to put the guns up, as you will get full value and not a discounted value

Thanks for the info guys. I'd considered putting them up here, and likely will now. I was basically considering the easy way out. I'll have to drive an hour or so to Houston to do a FTF, so I was just hoping to get something close to reasonable here. I doubt that will happen.

Retail shop is going to put 100% markup on anything they buy. That's standard retail markup. So a shop is paying 50% of what you paid retail for your rifles. Now they're used.

If they're 95% or better you might get 33% what you paid for them -- if they're in demand. I had one of the first Ruger semi-autos, 944 in 40 S&W. The shop just plain didn't want to take it in trade.

I've discovered that guns make really good gifts for nephews, cousins. They also work well as barter goods in swaps.

:scrutiny:

Standard practice on new guns with every dealer I know is 15-25%. 100% would put them way over MSRP. I agree that closer to (if not more than) 100% is a standard retail markup with most products, including accessories in a gunshop. But the guns themselves are an exception.

The shop I help out at does 18.5%, then round up a little and end with a 9. For example, a gun we buy from the distributor for $624 comes to $736.32 at 18.5%. We'd put it out at $739 or $749 for a nice round sale price.

Used guns, however, typically get marked up 60-100%, depending on what we got into it for and what we can move it at..

Trade in is generally a sure-fire way to get the least amount possible for a gun.
I don't want to be a "puppy kicker" but I'm gonna say you'd be looking at about $150 in a trade.

Indeed. When selling firearms, only do private-party transactions. I have never received actual value when selling to a shop of any kind--I have, however, sold a few face-to-face and have never had any regrets about what the final agreed amount was.

The Saiga wholesales around $260 for the standard model. So the dealer will probably offer anywhere from 150 to 225, depending on whether he wants it, can get a new one, etc etc.
You can list it here or on other forums and get more money. Be prepared for the following responses:

1) Can I get more pics (no one has ever seen a Saiga rifle in 223 before)
2) How many rounds have you put through it?
3) Does it come with the box? (listing clearly reads "with box")
4) If that was a _____________(7.62 version/longer barrel/short barrel/different stock) I'd be all over it.
5) Do you have a scope mount for it (listing clearly does not say scope mount)
6) Would you trade for a__________(Mosin Nagant/Hi point carbine with all the extras/case of .223 ammo/Smith Sigma etc)?
7) How many mags? (Listing clearly says 2 mags)
8) Are the mags factory?

Once you have the deal worked out wait two days for a PM that says "sorry but my car broke down/dog died/HVAC went out/daughter got sick and I have to back out.
Once you get the money and ffl in hand you will discover that the dealer will not accept a shipment from a private person so you'll have to find an FFL who will handle the transaction.
Seems like a lot of trouble for an extra $50 but that's your call.
