For you handloaders, how much 'plinking' ammo do you load up between visits to the range?

I'm fairly new to reloading and am filling old pencil boxes with ammo. I'd say probably a few hundred of 9mm and 1000 of 45acp on hand right now.

The problem is that I really enjoy reloading, but I'm not sure how long my next range visit will be or when it will be, so I usually over load the amount that I'll end up shooting.

How much do you fellas keep on hand? Do you shoot until you're out, go home, reload those and go back and shoot the same amount next time? Should I find a solid number that I'm comfortable with and just shoot that much?

Looking for experienced advice.

Well, I like trying different loads in my handguns by either trying different powders or bullets so I really don't keep more than maybe a few hundred rounds of all my handgun calibers on hand. I don't have many favorite loads yet so I don't want to make 1000 rds and decide I don't like it. Now My M1 Garand is a different story I have a my perfect load for it and have several hundred rds of 30-06 loaded in Enbloc clips in bandolers ready to go.

45ACP
I know I have usually 2k of 230gr ball loaded at a time. I have 3-4 of 200gr LSWC loaded, usually 1K moon clipped for the 625's
9mm
I probably have 3-4 loaded
223
Precison ammo there is 3K
Blasting ammo there is 3K
308
500 rnds

I keep more of my plinking ammo ammo loaded then I do specialty (heavy magnum) ammo. I'd say about 500-750 of .38 158 gr RF, .45 acp 200 lswc and .44 mag 250 gr Unique loads and maybe 3 or 400 each of heavy .44's and .357's

Ut Oh - sorry to hear you've caught the communicable disease caller reloadingitus. It's a bummer. Next thing that'll happen is you'll be scrounging range brass, then polishing it up to an incredible sheen. Before you know it you'll be loading for calibers you don't even have. When you need to move your loading area because there's too many boxes of loaded ammo lieing around you'll know it's time to seek professional help. I'll tell you more but I need to go load. Just polished up 367 newly trimmed cases of .223 last night and they need loading now.
Later.....

I could arm a small Central American country. My shooting partner and I could probably arm a medium size Central American country together. There is no such thing as enough guns or ammo.

Hope this helps.

I hate seeing empty brass just lying around,so of the about 25 different calibers I reload I average about 4000 rounds of reloads for each.with 32 S&W long about 1000 for the low side and about 35,000 rounds of 38spec. for the hi side.with my rifle loads all avg about 4000 rds. now the factory stuff and mil-surp ammo is another story. jwr

i try to keep a k around in my heavy use calibers. (223, 9mm, 38spl, 45acp, 40sw)

when i have time to load, i do as many as i can, then when i have time to shoot i don't have to worry about running back to the bench right away if i don't want to.

I try to keep at least a months supply loaded up, then I never have to worry about ammo if I have an unexpected opportunity to shoot.

Not that many loaded rounds but I have a good stockpile of components for 9mm, .38 Special/.357 Magnum, 30-06, .243 and 7mm-08.

Right now, I've got 3000 155 grain Ranier's for my 40's loaded up and 2000 125 grain Rem SJHP's loaded as well. I never let my plinking ammo get below 1000 rounds, if it does, then its time to buy powder, primers and bullets.:D

Man can never have enough ammo, onhand!

.45 acp - - At least TWO .50 caliber ammo cans, full of 200 gr LSWC.
.223 - - - At least 1,000 rounds of 69 gr BTHP match grade ammo.
.357 - - - At least 1,000 rounds of 158 jhp

There once was a time that a buddy and I would put our MEC shotshell loaders on the same bench and load paper boxes FULL of 12 ga shells.
(A paper box is 11"W x 17"L x 10" H)

I'm still in the testing stages for finding the reload I want in 45acp. Still trying to find a nice less smoky powder for the FMJ. But when I do I would like to fill several 50 cal. cans.

I have 350 rounds of .38 Special for practice. This lasts quite awhile because I probably only shoot the snubby once or twice a month.

I have about 1200 rounds of 9mm but I shoot 400-800 rounds a month. I try to keep about a two month supply on hand just in case I have a delay in getting supplies. CCI primers and VV N320 powder are sometimes hard to come by locally and I don't want to maintain big inventories of them.

I'd like to keep more around, but I keep blowing it up. I have this contraption that smacks a round on the back and makes it explode, and the explosion pushes the lead and down a hollow metal tube. Once that happens, I can't stop myself until it's all gone, and I need to make some more. :)

My problem is I absolutely hate it when I don't run out of bullets, primers, powder, and cases at the same time.

So I run out of primers, and have to buy more. But then I run out of cases, and still have some of the primers I just bought, so I have to get more cases. It just keeps going and going until finally, several thousand rounds later, you run out of everything at the same time, and can stop.
