Yesterday I found out that my Social Security Disablity has been approved and together with my VA disability I think I can afford a Barret M82.

The Barret website says M82s have a MSRP of $8,050 for a new rifle with Pelican case and cleaning kit. I hate to pay MSRP for anything, but when I asked a couple of local gun dealers about ordering one thier eyes lit up like christmas trees. Is there anyone who sells at cost plus a fee or persentage?

have you considered a model 99 (bolt action, single-shot) for about half the price of the semis?

given where ammo prices are ($5 / pop!) i'm not going to be blasting .50 bmg ammo like 7.62 x 39 mm.

take the money you save and get some reloading equipment from rcbs. a modified rockchucker and .50 bmg dies and other stuff will set you back a grand or so.

salt the rest away ... time to save!

You're disabled enough for the government to give you some of my money yet healthy enough to shoot a .50bmg?

I see why you are called jerkface. First that is plain rude, second I have seen vets missing hands and legs and can still shoot a .50 cal just fine.

Check out CDNNsports.com, more specifically their downloadable PDF catalog. They have a package deal right now that includes the scope and a bunch of other stuff for $8300. My guess is that if you order from them (in TX) and have a local dealer to transfer through that you probably won't be paying sales which is worth something.

Sorry I didn't see the VA part of his post. I thought it just said social security. My sincere apologies to Wideym. From now on I'll drink my coffee before I start typing.

Do some online research first at Gunbroker.com, AuctionArms.com, etc to see if there are ever any listed. I would also call Barrett direct and see if they have any used or any leads on used units. I would guess they do.

I'm SSSsoooo glad I bought my Model 99 a few years ago. But it still wasn't cheap. It was 2800 and then because i live in California and getting ammo here is a REAL pain. I switched to .416, still not cheap though. Anyways good luck

Every time one of these threads comes up I'm struck by the sudden urge to just sell off half my collection and buy one. :(

I'm jealous as well.

I wouldn't have anywhere to properly shoot it.

That, plus just getting around the idea of spending that much on a gun (and ammo ) is what stands in my way.

You do know that the M82 is somewhat lacking in the accuracy department, right?

Around $7,500 seems to be the going rate if you shop around. You can often find used M82 with a low round count. It's hard to find ranges that allow 50 BMG, and they are expensive to shoot. A lot of the Barretts that are purchased get shot a few times, and then are mostly just shown to jealous friends.

I thought My M82A1 was pretty cool until i went to a 50 long range match and got my butt kicked. If I were going to do 50 BMG again, I'd get something like a WindRunner.

YMMV

I wouldn't think of talking you out of a semi-auto .50 BMG. They are just plain cool but as was previously mentioned I have found the price of new ammo at todays rat prohibitive. If I didn't reload I wouldn't be shooting a .50. That said, you can have a reasonably good shooting bolt action (single or magazine fed, Barret, Armalite etc.) a quality scope, the loading equipment plus some brass and supplies for the same kind of money the Barret will cost you. Having these extras may actually sustain your enthusiasm for this caliber for years to come. Now if money is no object by all means get a semi-auto Barret. I think that every bit as important as the rifle in this situation is your choice of optics. I settled on a NightForce at about $1600 (no you don't have to spend this much but you can spend more, i.e. US Optics). This might give you something else to think about when adding up the cost. M82 Barret's are running about $8000 in my neck of the woods, your price seems reasonable.

Watch the youtube video where the guy shoots his .50 and the round comes back to hit him. Don't think I want one of those. MaDeuce or MK19= yes, M82= no. You would be better served by a .338 or similar rifle.

Are you saying that the brand/model of rifle somehow contributed to this ricochet? That just isn't the case. Many factors could have contributed to this weird event (type of round/projectile, load, distance from target). Not the least of which could have been the angle of the plate steel target. I believe the lesson to be learned here is don't shoot fixed plate steel targets, don't shoot steel targets with FMJ's and definitely not head on. The same type of freak accident could happen with any of the weapons mentioned.

it is unsafe to shoot any rifle round at steel that close.

M82's are 2MOA weapons as the come from the factory. The trigger, well sucks, and it needs accurizing. There are smiths that can tune them up, like Anzio Ironworks in St. Pete, FL more then a couple have been shipped straight from the factory to Anzio for accurizing.

It's worth noting that the current 1000 yard record with an M82, to the best of my knowledge, is 11 inches. So in essence the absolute best achievable grouping with that platform at that distance is 1 MOA. Realistically, from what I understand one should expect to get about 2 MOA. Even Barrett acknowledges the accuracy limitations; according to their publications, the M107 was designated the Special Application Scoped Rifle because it's not a 1-MOA platform. Or so I recall.

On the other hand, there's definitely something to be said for being able to sling ten rounds downrange as fast as you can pull the trigger.

It's worth noting that the new Serbu and EDM semi-autos are both fixed barrel designs (IIRC, the Serbu is a form of direct impingement, and the EDM is piston based). In theory, one should expect to see considerably better accuracy from either rifle. I'd suspect either one will likely be able to do 1 MOA fairly easily, but who knows...no real reports yet on either system.

I was all ready to go get one before the next elections until a friend of mine got one and allowed me to help him zero it in at 100 yds. The gun itself is, IMO, a very nice platform. Recoil was very manageable, no more than 12ga slug, IMO. The concussion was a bit stunning. After seeing the results of the groups, however, I was not impressed. (I'm of the old, 'only accurate rifles are interesting' mentality.) I'm opting for a BOHICA at this time hoping it'll group much better (when I get it in a couple months).

CDNN has an exception deal on M82s at this time (fully dressed and equipped with ammo). Check it out.

Thanks for all your advice. I have decided to wait until the big Tulsa gunshow in april to make a decision. One of my friends also got me thinking of buying a class III MG instead.

Also let me tell you all that it only took seven months from the date I filed for SS disability for them to approve it. So not every disablity claim gets disaproved the first time and takes years to approve.
