How NOT to shoot yourself with a Serpa Holster

It doesn't matter what flavor of holster I am using, safety is always enganged when a round is chambered while my 1911 is holstered. basic 1911 practice.

Only a fool carries his 1911 in Condition Zero.

Only a beginner carries his 1911 in Condition Two.

Only a person in a ceremony will carry his (useless) 1911 in Condition Three.

I don't like kydex holster, just because they are so hard on the finish.
The Serpa holster is IMHO overpriced and as shown in the video leaves room for errors.

Why would he not use the safety? I don't know of anyone who carries in that manner.
Some will leave the hammer down on a live round, which depending on the gun, is debateable, but cocked and unlocked I never thought of as being an issue in 40 years of carrying.

I guess I'm a fool for carrying a chambered XD. It's fired just like a 1911 without a thumb safety. It's safe to carry a 1911 without the safety on. One guy here has been doing it for over 30 years without a problem.

I know a guy who has unprotected sex every weekend with a different girl.

Been doing it for a long time.

That must mean its safe.

WAIT A MINUTE!!! Are you saying this isn't safe either?! :banghead:

Are you really supposed to press that button with the tip of your finger? It looks to me as if this guy is practicing it wrong.

Are you talking about the release button on the holster? If so, yes. I carry my M9 in a Serpa dropleg when overseas. It offers a secure and easy to draw from platform. By using your trigger finger to operate the release button you have a natural firing grip on the weapon as it leaves the holster.

The only thing that a single level retention does (thumb break, serpa button, etc) is keep the gun from falling out when you are running, jumping, climbing trees. They might slow down a bad guy a little bit, so you can put your thumb in his eye. Level two and three add a couple more obstacles to a bad guy, without unduly slowing down the good guy. Ultimately you need to train, train and train some more. The guy who shot himself in the video which spawned all this, states clearly that he switched weapons platforms and holster types, which led to him shooting himself.

Please explain how it is? Both of them are fully cocked, trigger can't be pulled without the grip safety being depressed. What's the difference?

Basically what I've learned watching this video is that the serpa made for a 1911 is poorly designed.

Watching his video, your finger DOES go into the trigger guard with a 1911.

With an m&p that problem doesn't exist and the finger goes along the frame of the gun, not the trigger guard

*swyped from the evo so excuse any typos*

Timing is a funny thing. I posted this video earlier today on this same topic.

Some of you may recall my article from 2005 entitled 'The Blackhawk Serpa: A Damning Review. I did a follow up post in 2006 illustrating how I was teaching the use of the Serpa Duty Holster to a security group at NASA.

I'm still not a fan of the design but they have sold over a million of them.
