I have some new LC brass, some were down to 1.745 or so, below spec. Are they to short to load ? They are only fired once...and I may have cut them to short.

I am sorry and will edit this now. I am speaking of .223 .

I'm reading ''LC'' as Long Colt .. .45 . Case length for these is 1.285 as a std ... but you say 1.745!! Did you mean 1.245?? That'd mean short by 40 thou .. quite a lot.

Considering tho these do not have to headspace on the case mouth ... then I'd see no probs by using ... as long as not hot loads, cos as case capacity goes down, and with a deep seated heavy bullet ... possibly pressures could rise. Are these for revo or carbine?

If I've got it all wrong ... sorry! ''LC'' only means one thing to me!

hahaha! .... Lack of lateral thinking by self!

1.760 is the std case length usually quoted ... so we are short by 1.5 thou - not a lot .... but headspacing now is a factor, and so the gun the ammo is intended for begins to matter more. Mind you .... IIRC the headspacing will be primarily from the neck .. tho I may need corrected on that .....

In which case the ''jump'' becomes longer, unless bullet seating is adjusted to achieve normal OAL.

I'll rest on this one for now ... there are those probably better qualified to make a good suggestion. If they can be used then even one more firing will add a tad of stretch ... so ''gaining'' some length back.

I'd probably load and throw those thru my Mini ... I know that !

From the data I have, the trim to length for .223 is 1.750", which is what I use when I resize and trim brass for my AR. A difference of .005 shouldn't be too much to worry about as far as safety goes. I'm pretty sure I've loaded .223 brass trimmed at least as low as 1.749" and maybe 1.748" because there is going to be some inaccuracy when measure with calipers (+/- .001 with my dial caliper).

Hmmm .. someone else with the 1.750 figure. Lee and Lyman #47 both have the 1.760 quoted ... which I have worked with before.

And yet ... just at random picked up a once fired American Eagle case .. danged if that ain't 1.750!!!

I now wait to see what other info people have.:p

5.56 mmNATO LC Brass

Great brass and seems to be plentiful for the time being anyway.Seems I heard some rumblings of the LC brass becomng extinct thru a plant shutdown. I hope this is incorrect . Some lots do run a little short though-why I couldn't say but I've loaded some as short as 1.735 once-fired thru my MINI-14 with no problems. Could not discuss accuracy due to my average MINI-14's 3-6 MOA on any given day.(Gotta send that to Odessa,Tx. one day) I've noticed the same short once-fired in gov't spec. Federal and Winc. .45ACP brass as well.I'm a little more careful here as it's supposed to headspace from the case mouth.
P95Carry, Speer and some others call the .223 trim to length @ 1.750. I've seen it both ways. One more firing should get you back on track,Tommygun.

Yup, I use the Speer #13 manual which lists 1.750". I also keep a printed copy of the Winchester reloading manual (the free one in PDF format on the website) by my reloading bench for quick reference and Winchester also lists 1.750" for the trim to length.
